Memento
At dinner we were recalling classic bits from local TV in the 1980s and 1990s. As far as I know none of them have turned up on YouTube, which worries me because the networks don’t maintain complete libraries, and these bits might be lost forever. So if you happen to have them on video, please post them on YouTube and send me the link. Future generations need to see how mass media has evolved over the decades. More importantly, we need evidence that we really saw what we think we saw, and were not just hallucinating.
1. Charlie Arceo the movie reviewer with a speech impediment (ngongo) saying “Ang pelikulang ito ay bulok.”
2. Babette Villaruel the movie reporter who did neck rolls for added emphasis
3. Divina Valencia hitting talent manager Rey de la Cruz on the head with a microphone
4. Inday Badiday asking a lost child, “Kilala mo ba ako? Ano’ng pangalan ko?” and the lost child saying, “Opo. Bakla.”
5. The classic Eat Bulaga quiz question, “Ano ang common name ng NaCl?”
6. Any of the Alma Moreno-LoveliNess stories that were true (Many of them were recycled Ricky Belmonte jokes).
7. See-True interview with the woman who gave birth to a fish.

Charlie declared Payaso bulok.

“Inday Badiday asking a lost child, ‘Kilala mo ba ako? Ano’ng pangalan ko?’ and the lost child saying, ‘Opo. Bakla.’
. . . I don’t recall seeing that — but I think it’s kinda similar to an anecdote told by the late Giovanni “Tita Vanni” Calvo in his radio show, which goes like this:
During the break from a film shooting, Odette Khan noticed na dinadaan-daanan lang siya nu’ng bagets na nagse-serve ng coffee. Na-offend si Odette — imagine ‘yung mga baguhan na nasa set ay pinagsisilbihan nitong batang ito, samantalang siyang institusyon na ay nilalampas-lampasan lang. Tinawag ng lola n’yo ‘yung bagets. “Kilala mo ba kung sino ako?” Odette proudly asked.
“Hi-hindi po,” takot na sagot ng bata.
Naloka si Odette. To retain her poise and dignity, taas-noo nitong sinabihan ang bata: “P’wes! Alamin mo kung sino ako!”
The following day, break time nanaman. This time super-asikaso ang bagets kay Odette. Flattered and lola n’yo. “O,” natutuwang sabi nito sa bata, “kilala mo na ba kung sino ako?”
“O-opo, ma’am,” ngatong na sagot ng star-struck na bagets.
“Kung gayon,” utos ni Odette, “sabihin mo nang dahan-dahan ang pangalan ko. Sino ako?”
“Ma’am,” sagot ng bata. “K-kayo po si Inday Badiday.”

I think what Charlie actually said was “ba-huuu-ra”…Ang Payaso ay ba-huuu-ra.

*chuckling
-Joe Quirino introducing Ms. Jean Saburit
-Alma Moreno’s dancers sometimes wore compact disks as accessories (Imagine how excited they must have been when CD-R King opened at the turn of the century)
-Ike Lozada’s rendition of “Mad World”

The classic ‘NaCl” question was not from “Eat Bulaga.” It was another noontime show hosted by the late Eddie Mercado.

Joe Cantada, calling a PBA game. Shell vs. [forgot].
Shell’s center forward Philip Cezar was playing and snared a rebound, and in one of the classic slip-ups in sports commentating history, Joe, meaning to say ‘the elongated tentacles of Philip Cezar’ said instead, to a nation-wide audience, ‘the elongated testicles of Philip Cezar.’ Silence followed for several seconds before his partner took over while Joe probably tried to regain his poise.

Luckily I lived to witness most of these, particularly items 1 through 4.
Yes, I do remember Babet Villaruel doing that 360-degree neck-and-eyeball-roll and the OST “Say say say, what you want…” (forgot the song and artist, pasensiya matanda na hehe) ; and yes, of course the head-bashing incident involving the feisty Divina V and Rey dela Cruz.
Now, I don’t know if anybody remembers Donita Rose’s audition for That’s Entertainment. I think she was doing this Madonna number when all of a sudden her bustier slipped; of course, lo and behold her endowments debuted on TV for a couple of seconds. That was a first on TV, I guess, as it came way way before Janet Jackson’s celebrated busty slip with JT.

About slipping tubes (not youtube), sultry actress Ellen Esguerra was dancing in Joe Quirino’s show when the tube accidentally slipped showing one then two mounds.
In Archie Lacson’s dance show, a similar thing happened to the younger sister of Maan Hontiveros, while doing a disco number, showing molehills instead.

Ellen Esguerra! That’s another character I’d like to see again! Tita Vanni used to tell lots of her hilarious antics on his radio show.
Then some more treasures from “See-Tru”:
1. Madam Elma, on being asked what’s so special about her: “Bumobohay ako ng patay!”
2. Lala Montelibano’s encounter with her alleged mother.
3. Rene Mariano’s annual New Year predictions (none of which ever came true, I think).
Classic Pinoy commercials:
1. Pepsodent: “Lasang bebelgam.”
2. The Isko/”Eh, di ibalik ang sweti” commercial.
3. “Ibalik n’yo ako sa Pilipinas!!!” government commercial on OFWs in the late 70s.
Award show moments:
1. Ate Guy, on winning over then-FAMAS favorite Ate Vi: “Mamay, hindi nagkatutoo ang hula nila!”
2. Viveka Babagee: “Take it, take it!”
