Hey, has anybody here seen the film Once? Excellent , excellent. Not your Oscars type of movie but to those who want a stripped down love story with an amazing soundtrack (and delightfully unpretentious non-actors), do watch this film.
====

Once was definitely a great, entertaining film. Trivia: did you know that Glen Hansard, who played the guy in Once, was also the guitar player in The Commitments? Check it out. The interesting thing is that in The Commitments, his character and the bass player are seen busking in the downtown streets.

Been looking for it for half a year in Quiapo and finally got my copy last Friday (at the dibidihan of course). A true indie gem this one.

BTW, the main theme Falling Slowly sung by Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova (the stars) is up for an Oscar for Best Song. It will win.

And so begins...my torrent-assisted adventure to see all these flicks before the awarding date. I already have No Country for Old Men in the can and currently waiting for Atonement and Juno to finish. Will have to wait for the other ones to appear on minova. Hey, don't put that pirate hat on me. I watch films on theaters everytime i go to the city. I just happen to live in a town without a single movie theater. It's not so boring here really. My favorite place in town to go to is the beach where Col. Kilgore uttered "I love the smell of napalm in the morning...."

If only for that horrifying bathhouse scene, I'd say give it to Viggo. Very few American actors do full frontal nudity and a fight scene in the nude at that? With his dong swinging all over the place? Viggo's a king.

Juno? It's charming but definitely not the best movie of the year. Ellen Page in the movie is a standup comic, a cross between Ellen de Generes and Janeane Garofalo.

Juno's about a sixteen-year old girl who got pregnant. That's all I get from watching the first few minutes of it. Haven't re-watch it again since then.

By the way, I have seen the Atonement adaptation already. Great cinematography. Didn't appreciate my first watching, though. Maybe because of my novel biases. Second watching made me appreciate the musical score, but still not completely how the story goes. Didn't hear the lines I would have wanted to hear from the book [the novelists not getting any atonement at all]. Overall, it was good. But not freaking great.

meow, I could give you a copy of the film, if you still haven't seen it and is still interested watching it.

When I watched "La Vie en Rose" at the EU Film Festival last October in Shangri-la, I thought it was an unappreciated old (and great) art film. It's at the latter part of the movie that I started to get chills, and realized that it's actually the life-story of French singer Edith Piaf. Then it's after I googled the movie when I discovered it's a new film (2007).

The lead role of Piaf played by Marion Cotillard, I believe, is flawless. She recently won (and expecting FedEx) Golden Globes' Best Actress and is currently nominated on the same category for BAFTA and Oscars.

La Vie en Rose (released in France as La Mome) was only shown in Manila through Cine Europa, three times and for free. Amazing movie.

=====
What’’s it about anyways (JUNO)?
=====

The short of it is that it's about a 16-year old that gets pregnant and plans on having the baby for an upwardly mobile couple.

It may seem simple but we get to see a smart, young kid who made a wrong turn but tries to make the best out of her situation. She also has drama with her baby daddy as well as the kid's adoptive parents. It may seem like a heavy topic, but Diablo Cody's excellent work in the writing department keeps everything light and warm (and has thus given her an Oscar nod as well). It was actually my favorite movie that was released last year.

I wrote a blurb about it in my blog if you're interested:

Watched Juno a few days ago and it was good. But since my black dog is following me around, it may actually be even MORE brilliant than I thought.
It's about a teenager who gets pregnant and decides to put the unborn baby up for adoption. Watch it.

Even more down now that Heath is dead.

Wow

Cate Blanchett nominated for two major category, hope she wins, although I have not watched Elizabeth yet I know she's a great actress.

And Juno's E Paige, good luck Shadow Cat!
