One nostril at a time
Stimpy’s nose goblin, Frank Snotra
Everyone I know has a cold or recently had one, so here’s a timely bit of advice: Don’t blow your nose when you have a cold. Apparently it doesn’t relieve stuffiness, it just creates excess pressure in your sinus cavities and propels mucus into your sinuses.
I’m inclined to agree. Whenever I’m congested I blow my nose so hard I risk having my ears explode, but it doesn’t actually clear up my nasal passages. I just keep doing it in the hope that it will work. According to the NYT article, blow one nostril at a time, gently, and take decongestants. I don’t believe the part about decongestants; I’ve never tried one that worked.

I haven’t gotten a cold for a long time now, since late last year when the cold season kicked in and everybody else was sneezing and coughing. My secret? in case anybody wants to know, is mouthwash. The moment I get a scratchy throat, I deep gargle with mouthwash three times a day. I do get the sniffles, but within a day or two the cold is gone.

You know what works for colds? Wasabi paste. Yup, that green Japanese condiment that makes you feel like your brain is about to explode. Whenever I get nose congestion, I take a small amount of it, and wait for its effect for a few minutes. You’ll feel like your nose and skull is about to crack open, you’ll get teary eyed, and then you literally feel the congestion melting away. You’ll also sweat, which is good for colds with chills. I also heard that any household suka, mixed with tons of siling labuyo, and ingested, works wonders. To make it more pleasant, immerse your Boy Bawang in it and enjoy.

Jessica, if the oral decongestansts don’t work for you, you can always try the nasal spray which is more effective.

Hey, thank you. What a timely post. I have a runny nose. I’ll try this suggestion and see if there’s a difference.

I caught less colds and flu viruses when I worked in hospitals compared to going to church, movies or supermarket. Handwashing really worked, I guess plus the fact that people around me were sneezing and coughing relentlentlessly in all those public places.
Me, I snort and swallow. Once, I sneezed into a handtowel and gripped my nose to hard, I felt something in my ear almost broke. I only blow my nose when there’s so much mucus oozing out.
I remember there was a neighbor of mine who played yoyo with his uhog. It was so gross:I could take the uhog going in and out of his nose but when it poured and he snorted it back before it touched the ground, I freaked out and ran away from him. He was standing when he did that by the way.
