John Hughes orphans watch 500 Days of Summer
Photo: We may be too ancient for this movie, but Raymond is ready for the next flood. Green vest from Uniqlo. T-shirt by Raymond, Louie, and Mario, available soon.
Two minutes into the movie.
Me: It’s cute.
Raymond: Yeah, cute.
Five minutes.
Me: Aba, humi-Heath Ledger si Joseph Third Rock. (From some angles Joseph kind of reminds me of Heath Ledger.)
Raymond. Oo nga. Pero pag pangit ang anggulo, luma-Lyle Lovett siya. (Yes, but from his bad angles he sort of resembles Lyle Lovett.)
During the karaoke scene.
Me: Wow, a karaoke machine that has The Pixies.
In the Ikea sequence.
Raymond and I: Ang ganda ng kurtina. (Nice curtains!)
30 minutes into the movie:
Raymond: Are you into the movie?
Me: Not really. You?
Raymond: Not really.
So we left. Conclusion: We’re too old for 500 Days of Summer.

I watched the whole film.
Even if it’s part of Cannes. Even if it has good music. Even if a lot of people appreciate it. I don’t.

But you missed the clever editing!

You should give it a chance again on dvd. Gordon levitt carried that film. He’s great. I’m tired of the usual formulas that relies on Kate Hudson or Jennifer Aniston or Matthew McConaughey.

I agree with Dr. Feelgood, you missed the clever editing. The “Expectations vs Reality” sequence and the Ingmar Bergman montage were inspired!
(Bergman nga lang ba yun? I’m sure about “The Seventh Seal” reference, and one of the shots looked like it was imitating “Persona” but I couldn’t place the film with the mime and balloon.)
I think this is one of the most creatively shot romcoms I’ve seen. It has that quirky whimsical feeling of “Stranger Than Fiction” combined with the indie hipster feel of “High Fidelity.”
Add to that the cute-yet-grounded story plus the charisma, charm and chemistry of the leads and yeah… this is my favorite film of the year… just ahead of “District 9” and “Adventureland.”
I had a blast with all the music, film & pop culture references.

Even at 41, i still enjoyed the movie. It was clever, fresh and entertaining. A lot better than the formula hollywood romances with lead actors in the 30’s-40’s acting like they’re in their teens.
