LitWit: Read the candidates
As campaign season approaches full nuttiness, it’s time to survey the field of presidential candidates and think very hard about what they have to offer the electorate. One way to approach this task is to regard them as characters in a novel that is still being written, and to cite their strengths and weaknesses as human beings.
Your task this week is simple: List the positive and negative qualities of each of the presidential candidates. Focus on the qualities of each person, not on how much money he has to throw at the elections. It may not seem like it, but funds are not the only factor. Your entry will look like this:
Candidate X
Pro: Truly feels the plight of the underprivileged
Con: Is a complete dingbat
etc.
Keep it short. Entries will be accepted until 11:59pm on Saturday, 6 March 2010.
This week’s winner will receive three books: America: A Citizen’s Guide to Democracy Inaction by Jon Stewart and the writers of The Daily Show; The Reluctant Fundamentalist by Mohsin Hamid, and the novel Away by Amy Bloom.
The Weekly LitWit Challenge is brought to you by our friends at National Bookstore. Thank you NBS for your continuing support.

ACOSTA
Pro: Jay Sonza
Con: Imelda Papin
AQUINO
Pros: Seems sincere in wanting to bring CHANGE and HOPE to the Philippines, no record of corruption or shady deals, basso profondo speaking voice
Cons: Seems contented to rest on parents’ laurels, no record of initiative (Hacienda Luisita) or brilliance (political career); poor strategic skills (resorts to verbally bashing competition, put kid sister in charge of promotion materials such as TV ad with forgettable jingle and annoying nephew at the end)
DE LOS REYES
Pro: Looks potentially promising, sincere to help
Con: Not that famous, wasn’t that impressive in debates
ESTRADA
Pro: More Eraptions
Con: More Eraptions
GORDON
Pros: Comparatively impressive political resume, a fine speaker
Cons: Not above under the counter stuff (from Subic and Tourism staffers)
MADRIGAL
Pros: Tough without crossing the line to insanity; off-the-record, significantly favorable testimonies from families who have asked for help from her office

PERLAS
Pro: Apparently he’s been altering the course of national and global events for over 30 years…
Con: … without being directly involved in politics.
TEODORO

VILLANUEVA
Pros: Claims among other things moral fortitude
Cons: Seriously… Bus Ni Eddie? And there’s really something uncomfortable about candidates mashing politics and religion together.
VILLAR
Pros: Excellent strategic and decision-making skills (which includes popular masa endorsers and ditching debates because survey says the masses don’t watch them in favor of teleseryes anyway).
Cons: Excellent strategic evasive tactics; wears clothing and skin the color of Oompa Loompa, obviously panders to poor voters’ baser instincts, which subverts true democracy.
