And who is this idiot of a speechwriter? Why hasn’t he fallen on his sword (or pen) yet? Could it be someone in the Ateneo itself? As he proudly mentions in his speech, MVP has funded major buildings on campus (plus scholarships and professorial chairs). Will his generosity continue after his resignation? Perhaps it’s a financial rather than an ethical quandary for the Ateneo administration, as the comments of Chus and Jessica imply.
Conspiracy theory. Maybe Manny wanted out of Ateneo. But he can’t just resign out of the blue. There has to be a reason. So he sets things up to speak at the graduation and he fucks it up. I see no reason why this would happen unintentionally. So now, Manny resigns publicly. And now, Father Ben responds publicly: “Neither can I agree with you that “wala talaga akong mukhang ihaharap pagkatapos.” I would thus like to take up your retiring from official duties at the Ateneo with our officials and Board of Trustees and discuss it further with you.” Sorry Manny. It’s not that easy.
Danton Remoto – a professor from Ateneo – wrote a really interesting piece on this. I like it when he wrote. “Heaping praises on the businessman’s gesture, fellow Ateneans say it takes a lot of courage for someone like MVP to do such thing. You know, just as tough as what Ricky Martin did last week.” I wonder what meant by that. BTW — is it ok if I quote another blog in my comment? Will that be considered plagiarism?
I was crying when I finished listening to JKR, but I was laughing so hard when I finished reading the text of MVP’s speech in the Inquirer. He must have ordered a secretly disgruntled employee to write the speech for him, and this employee thought of the best way to get even —make his boss look stupid in front of Arrneans.
Hahahahahaha! This is indeed embarrassing, and to commit such an atrocity in,of all places, the Ateneo! I can’t understand why such an overachieving (or overrated?)capitalist CAN’T write his own speech and has to rely on other people to do it for him. I believe that if you want something done the way you want it,you better do it yourself–this is especially true of commencement speeches. This is your school, this is your memory you are talking about, even your deepest secrets that are hidden in the classrooms and hallways, only YOU know about these. How hard can it be to write your own original speech, huh? If he can’t,maybe he should hire me and I will write him the best speech he could ever need, even a eulogy for a toenail. Well, this is a guy who recruits Nigerian “students” (read:imports) to make sure that his high school alma mater wins the NCAA basketball crown–and still, they lost during the last season. That’s gotta hurt. See,cheaters sometimes win,but not all the time.
