The Social Network as a series of status updates
Have you seen David Fincher’s The Social Network yet? You know, the facebook movie.
I would’ve gone to the previews or caught it on opening day, but I’ve been traveling. Today I’ll finally get to see it. I’m of two minds about David Fincher: loved Seven, Fight Club, Zodiac; loathed Alien3, Panic Room, Benjamin Button. However I’ve seen just about every Jesse Eisenberg movie ever made, and enjoyed them all from Adventureland to Zombieland.
We have four Social Network T-shirts to give away. If you’ve seen The Social Network, write us a movie review in the form of a series of facebook updates. Post your entries in Comments by Tuesday, 9 November 2010. Winners will be announced on Wednesday the 10th.

I think Eisenberg was at his best on The Squid and The Whale.
Also love the running joke that if a production can’t afford Michael Cera in the cast, they get Jesse Eisenberg.

Jonathan Francisco: Just watched The Social Network for the 7th time. That’s why I prefer SM Cinemas.
Jonathan Francisco: TSN will be the Best Picture in the upcoming Oscars @Angus Miranda. I am so sure about this. And don’t bring up McCarthy not winning the Nobel Prize last October.
Jonathan commented on Angus Miranda’s status.
Jonathan Francisco: @Angus Miranda TSN is my new favorite movie. I love the editing, the score, and the writing is exceptional. You can’t even understand half of what Mark was saying. Try listening? And Inception? Seriously?
Jonathan likes Mark Zuckerberg.
Jonathan likes Eduardo Saverin.
Jonathan Francisco: Googling Trent Reznor.
Jonathan Francisco: That “It’s raining” scene; I could watch that over and over again without it appearing less impacting than the first time I saw it. I hope a lot of people get to watch The Social Network, even those who don’t think FaceBook is cool.
Jonathan Francisco: Ebert gave TSN four out of four stars @Angus Miranda.
Jonathan Francisco: Blogging non-stop. Something’s wrong, and I don’t know what it is.
Jonathan Francisco: I don’t understand why my friends did not love TSN. It truly changed me, and they failed to see something beautiful.

Stephanides: Fincher opens with The White Stripes’ “Ball and Biscuit” to remind us that this is a period film of a not-so distant past. I was unemployed when this song came out, definitely had more time than Zuckerberg to rant bitterly about girls who have rejected me or invent Facebook, but I guess I just wasn’t goal-oriented enough.
Stephanides: Is it really that dark in Harvard? Why do I feel like Jesse Eisenberg’s about to be killed by a faceless serial killer or something?
Stephanides: Zuckerberg needed a horny classmate to help him come up with the “relationship status” idea when Friendster was already doing it at the time? I know this is officially fiction; just didn’t expect it to be an alternate reality
Stephanides: feels like he should be enjoying this movie more if it was properly explained what made Facebook better than Friendster and MySpace in 2004
Stephanides: Watching Jesse Eisenberg finally play an uber-cocky young dude is so refreshingly breathtaking
Stephanides: loves how the rowing team guys are portrayed simultaneously as victims and idiots
Stephanides: finds it comforting that the dude who invented Facebook does the same loser-y things in Facebook that he does
Stephanides: is aware that art typically equates financial success with hollowness to make artists feel better about themselves, and is absolutely in love with this syndrome

: after ‘The Social Network’, Jesse Eisenberg will no longer be second-fiddle to Michael Cera. His brilliant portrayal of a socially-inept, unsympathetic character tore up the screen. Through Eisenberg, Mark Zuckerberg is clearly an ass, but an ass that you want to treat to a cup of coffee and a hug in the end.
: alternate title for ‘The Social Network’… Ultimate Revenge of the Nerd.
?: ‘The Social Network’ is a one-of-a-kind fast-talking, information-crammed drama that would’ve been boring and tedious in the hands of an inferior director and less-talented actors. David Fincher and the cast managed to come up with a gripping movie that is filled with insights and commentaries on the human need to ma…ke connections, be accepted, and come up a winner.
: After watching ‘The Social Network’, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of emptiness in the wake of its frenetic pacing and dialogue. Mark Zuckerberg went through people in a speed that would’ve surpassed Madonna’s early in her long career. And what for? He still misses his old girlfriend. Revenge might be sweet, but the… loneliness that comes after is all-too bitter.

I am tempted to do a status update for every time Andrew Garfield graced the screen, but it would get old quick. And thus, something short and sweet:
>> Jesse Eisenberg changed his current city to Palo Alto, California.
>> Justin Timberlake changed his relationship status to In a Relationship.
> 1 person liked this
>> Jesse Eisenberg changed his relationship status to In a Relationship.

> Andrew Garfield: Hey Jesse, where do I click to do that? Not with Christy anymore but the info could come in handy
> Andrew Garfield: “LOL”, Justin likes your relationship status. how do I do that
> Andrew Garfield: WAIT who are you in relationship with? As your CFO I demand to know.
> Andrew Garfield: I’m cutting your credit card, you whore :(

Mark: I just saw The Social Network and it was a genius! It’s a very smaart film, and I really get it. It is really smart and I get all the messages it is relaying. I sure hope you watch it guys. It’s 5-stars, like the last review I did here at my facebook.
Justin: Where there sharks in it?
Mark: No, Justin. Don’t be stupid, how could there be sharks in it? Go watch it, because it really has alot to teach you about friendship and how you should believe in God and boating and alot more. You should watch it, because it’s really smart and artistically. David Pitcher directed it, and he won the Oscars.
Justin: Hihi..alot
Mark: Your so stupid Justin. Go watch it so you can learn what beautiful films. Plus, Michael Cera is in it. Also, I’m smarter than you ohh snap. Just kidding but not really hehe.
Dianne: The movie’s too noisy and dark, I don’t get it much.
Mark: Don’t blame the movie, sweetie. It’s probably because you’re a bitch haha I was only kidding, that’s Michael Cera’s line in the movie. And you’ll say I’m being mean but that’s okay because I’m cool. It’s like I’m in The Social Network haha I used the movie title as a joke I’m really witty.
Dianne: Sorry, Mark. I’m still in the party, right? Please don’t unfrend me.
Mark: Like all my posts first.

theSubmarine: Whoopiedoo! Rooney Mara and Andrew Garfield are in The Social network! You know, the new stars of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and the new Spider-Man.
theSubmarine: What do nerds and rap stars have in common? They can talk shi* really fast and get away as smart or awesome, or awesomely cool.
theSubmarine: The Social Network tells you a lot about guys with curly hair. Yes, Mark Suckerbird and Justin Thinnerlake. Why am I such a hater?
theSubmarine: As much as I hate to admit it, I crapped my pants laughing at the “nerdy” jokes. I don’t know how to feel that I actually understood it.
theSubmarine: I recommend The Social Network. It’s available in the Internet btw. Torrent? Yep, free movies. I’m sure Zuckerburg and Parker would understand. ;)

TheScud: The Social Network is a talk-a-thon. Lots of snappy dialogue, quotables quotes (stairmaster, anyone?), and smart-ass barbs.
TheScud: That guy with unruly curly hair from Zombieland is terrific in this movie. That stricken look during the falling out scene with best friend was priceless.
TheScud: Garfield is pretty good too. I hear he’s in Never Let Me Go. And oh, he’s the new spiderman too. i wonder how he could pass of as a high school student.
TheScud: Timberlake’s acting bothers me. It screamed G-A-Y when he’s supposed to be portraying a straight guy. what’s with that?
TheScud: I love the deposition sequences. Oh wait. Were those deposition sequences?
The Scud: David Fincher and Aaron Sorkin, you are gods. Really. And oh, you made me miss the mile-a-minute and exquisitely long takes of The West Wing.
TheScud: I wish I have half of Mark Zuckerberg’s chutzpah.

The Social Network, with Jesse Eisenberg playing the role of Mark Zuckerberg, whose phenomenal success as Facebook genius has changed the way people use the Internet.
The first time I’ve heard about the movie I was a bit disinterested. How are you supposed to tell a story about a nerd computer programmer? But I didn’t know David Fincher was doing the movie. Remembering his movies such as Seven and Fight Club, I had to give The Social Network at least a chance.
To my surprise, I liked it. This movie has a few awards written all over it. If you haven’t watched The Social Network, do yourself a favor and watch it. Trust me, you are missing a lot.
Now, being a semi-programmer (but not nerd) myself let me tell you something about one of the many technologies behind social networking sites. Cloud computing (CC). It may sound ethereal and too technical but it’s actually the opposite – it’s simple and user-friendly. Do you still remember the old database systems?: Sybase, Oracle, SAP running on mainframe, servers the size of an elephant? I said old, however these technologies are still being used today. But Cloud computing is 500 million times better. Okay, maybe not. But the sheer scalability of Cloud computing makes it a worthy investment for any company that relies on the robustness, reliability, and scalability of its database systems. Plus CC, has made programming a little bearable. You don’t have to be a Harvard Computer Engineering graduate (or undergrad in case of Mark Z.) to learn CC and all its elements. But a strong understanding of how data can form relationship with other data and make that combined entity perform a function should make your experience learning the tool a lot better.
Will Facebook last long? Maybe it’s just me, but I have this feeling, that it will stay here as long as people will choose to stay connected, update status online, and virtually poke each other.
Happy Facebook(ing)!

Miss_o is done with enrollment. Where to spend her excess tuition money and the rest of her day off? Watch a good movie!
Miss_o is bitten by The Social Network bug at the first scene. She wishes all of her dates were filled with hard to track conversations.
Miss_o thinks TSN should be a great movie having Kevin Spacey as one of the producers.
Miss_o postulates that geeks in movies and TV shows are portrayed as people unaware of their arrogance. They also have something wrong with their speech pathology, e. g. Mark Zuckerberg of The Social Network and Sheldon Cooper in The Big Bang Theory.
Miss_o loves the musical score for TSN! Mental note: get the track played at facemash creation scene.
Miss_o approves that guys who can make algorithms for mundane things are HOT!
Miss_o is trying to decipher who’s got a deeper voice between the Winklevoss twins.
Miss_o salutes Jeff Cronenweth for the great cinematography for TSN. Particularly liked the Henley regatta scenes.
Miss_o Mental note: get the track played at the regatta scene as well. It does sound familiar.
Miss_o says Justin Timberlake is OLD. Care to hide your eye bugs Justin?
Miss_o thinks you should not add crazy girlfriends in your facebook.
Miss_o applauds JT’s portrayal of Sean Parker. He made me wanna punch him for humiliating my Wardo!
Miss_o is once again mesmerized by yet another masterpiece from His Greatness, David Fincher.
Miss_o goes home with a renewed adoration for Jesse Eisenberg.
Miss_o likes The Social Network.
Miss_o likes Andrew Garfield.
Miss_o thinks she’s so silly to compare the voices of the Winklevii when there’s just one actor who portrayed them.
Miss_o is downloading The Social Network Soundtrack.
Miss_o hears Nine Inch Nail tinge to the tracks for TSN musical score.
Miss_o adds TSN soundtrack to her “working/reading mode” playlist.
Miss_o WATCH IT! WATCH IT! WATCH IT! (link to TSN’s trailer from Youtube)
Miss_o is watching The Social Network again.
Miss_o added Erica Albright as her friend.

Cacs at 10:07 am: We promised our straight guy readers an advice columnist for specifically heterosexual male straight guy concerns. Our nominee is Jon Morales of the national rugby team, who lives here and works at an NGO so he knows exactly what it’s like to be a straight man in Manila. Check out his reaction to our review of The Social Network. What do you think? He’s read Dune. As far as we’re concerned a guy who’s read Dune is highly qualified to dish out advice.

Jay | “You’re not an asshole Mark. You’re just trying so hard to be one.” ~ The Social Network. It’s kind of funny, that no matter how Mark maybe trying so hard to be an asshole, or an asshole, if you’re on Eduardo Saverin’s side, that you don’t entirely loathe him. Somehow, you still root for this guy. It’s like, if you hate him, you hate yourself too. (35 minutes ago)

Jay| “Sorry! My Prada’s in the cleaners, along with my hoodie and my fuck-you flip flops, you pretentious duschebag! …You better lawyer-up asshole, ‘coz I’m not coming back for 30 percent. I’m coming back for everything.” ~ The Social Network. Love this line. But the reaction shots shifts confusingly from Justin to Jesse that it looks as if the “duschebag” was intended for Mark. Eduardo is Brazilian, but Andrew’s version has no trace of the accent. (30 minutes ago)
Rey | Jay, Saverin is a Harvard student.
Jay | Ganun ba yun? You know, Eduardo is tanga. He’s an Economics major, and he got busted out because of a very obvious legal lack.
Rey| He believed that he was facing their (including Mark’s) lawyers.
Jay | “You’re going to be successful and rich. But you’re going to go through life thinking that girls don’t like you because you’re a tech geek. I want you to know, from the bottom of my heart, that won’t be true: It’ll be because you’re an asshole.” ~ The Social Network (20 minutes ago)

Rey | Jay, we only see Rooney Mara’s character twice, but it’s really a pivotal character. She basically started it all! Mark shouldn’t have messed with her name. You know, Albright to Albrecht and then call her a bitch.
Jay | I think what really pissed her off is when she referred to her bra size. “She’s a 34 B. As in barely anything there.”
Rey | Hahahaha
Ever | Hehehe. The best talaga si David Fincher.
Jay | @Rey. But really, Erica is important because she embodies what Mark cannot get and will not get, his failure to connect. Ironic, noh? You are like this bazillionaire inventor of a technological revolution that supposedly connects people, but you fail at this basic human relationship tremendously. Btw, Trent Reznor really does an awesome job with the music. (1 person likes this)
@Ever: I think Fincher has put his stamp on it, his attention to details, etc. But he worked on a very brilliant script by Aaron Sorkin. It plays out like a Greek tragedy even.
Jay | Review of The Social Network (2010)
“In the last scene of The Social Network, Jesse Eisenberg as Mark Zuckerberg is refreshing the page of the “girl who got away” every 5 seconds or so to check if she has responded to his “friend request”. It’s an indelible scene, not because it encapsulates what the film is trying to say about his character (creator meets creation), but because we saw ourselves in Mark, endlessly glued to the monitor and trying so hard to “make friends” with everybody, trying to connect the threads of relationships that were never there in the first place. The Social Network is terrific entertainment. You think you wouldn’t get more than technogeek-speak out of these Harvard-bred wisecracks, but the story (never mind if its fact-based or not) speaks to a plenty of contemporary social realities than say your current FB shoutout or relationship status.

Can we resend an entry if our previous awkward attempt at satire didn’t get to win? Because here’s mine:
Sear Penn: The Social Network could be my next Benjamin Heisenberg’s The Robber if Mark Zuckerberg ended up an ex-convict. It’s harder to root for misfits who didn’t experience prison because sometimes jerks who bad-mouth girlfriends don’t change.
Sear Penn: Brilliant move, Mr. Fincher. You proved that movies are better dark. In The Social you’re saying we don’t need our ears. (see: Mark and Sean in the disco bar scene)
Sear Penn: Most people online who are not on Facebook seem to react to The Social by highlighting their beef against Facebook’s security concerns. That’s understandable, because If there’s any place safer, more private and more identity-theft-free than ATM machines who have you always videotaped, it’s the internet outside Facebook.
Sear Penn: I use Facebook. Facebook is like your one old good reliable fancy phone. It’s got so many features you barely even have time to explore, but it doesn’t mean you can’t use it to call your friend.
Facebook also doesn’t seem to be that messy to use, unless of course you start categorizing your friends and you don’t care about the good humor websites that have been proven to lift you up and whose updates you can sometimes only view as an FB status.
Sear Penn: Oh sweet! A new Beartato comic!
