Compare and contrast
Rivals: Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal
Roger picked Rafa up at the airport and they hung out in Zurich before their exhibition match for Africa. Of course the concept of rivals hanging out makes for excellent public relations, but their friendship seems genuine.
Rivals: Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi
In his bestselling autobiography Open, Agassi described Sampras as stingy (made tons of money, never picked up the check at dinner) and boring. He repeated these…observations into a microphone during their exhibition match for Haiti. So Sampras served at his head.
Immaturity: not always age-based!

Fedal :worship:
Petros’ personality was as boring as his tennis. The Hit for Haiti exho became really awkward to watch after Petros tried to decapitate Andre.
Have you read the news about Petros’ house getting robbed and losing almost all of his trophies and shields?

There’s something about the Fed and Rafa that seems so familiar and relaxed that you want to see them as rivals on court and friends off the green.

I still tear up when I watch that ESPN tribute, and I’ve seen it a gazillion times. But it’how unprophetic it is! Roger’s still not exchanged the the trophies for teething rings, and is still hungry for more.

The whole episode was set off by Andre when he took another shot at Pete for being tight-fisted at the Hit for Haiti event, having already written about it in his book. When Pete attempted to serve the ball at Andre’s head, Roger tried to diffuse the awkward moment by quipping, “Man, this rivalry is intense!” and then asked Rafa to “do something.” Unfortunately, Rafa could hardly keep up with the banter due to his limited English, no?
I guess the best display of friendly rivalry between “Fedal” was during the Australian Open 2009 awards presentation where Roger cried buckets for failing to match Sampras’ 14 Grand Slams. After apologizing to Roger during his speech Rafa put an arm around his rival’s–nah, friend’s– shoulders right there on the stage. For a moment, I liked the Spaniard more than the bawling Swiss.
