Meryl/Maggie
Photo: Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher
We’re waist-deep in Oscar season and for once Meryl Streep fans are not tied up in knots: She’s not nominated this year. As always the award may go to a completely undeserving winner but she won’t be yanking the trophy out of Meryl’s hands.
Mama Meryl’s next role: former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady, directed by the woman who made Mamma Mia. Here is a publicity still from that movie. What do you think?
A. Uncanny resemblance
B. There are no British actresses?
C. They’re not going to make The Iron Lady lovable are they?
D. The director of Mamma Mia? Isn’t this a job for Stephen Frears, someone like that?
E. That’s what killed the ozone layer. Does the hair move?
F. Well Christopher Hitchens thought she was kind of sexy.
G. We know the accent will be perfect.
H. Scary!
I. (Fill in the blank.)

A, E and
I. (to quote Cameron from Modern Family) “Excuse me — Meryll Streep can play Batman and be the right choice; she’s perfection! Whether she’s divorcing Kramer, whether she’s wearing Prada. Don’t even get me started on Sophie’s Choice…” LoL!
Eric Stonestreet is hilarious!
I adore Meryll, too. I’d wipe the ground she walks on…and save the mop and never, ever clean it :)

E. I’m getting flashbacks to the insane amounts of Aqua Net my mother would use, as if the world would end if even a single hair deigned to move.

Streep looks exactly like Thatcher. Now, the director needs to make a movie will do Reagan’s BFF justice.

I love Meryl and “Mamma Mia” is a guilty pleasure but I wish Phyllida Lloyd would give us something more substantial in the Thatcher biopic.
Re promo pic: If Meryl can convince us that she can look like Maggie in a single snapshot, imagine what she can do it 90+ minutes. :)
Btw, I agree. Cameron’s “Meryl can play Batman” rant was so hilarious.

G. We know the accent will be perfect.
I miss her earlier films where her exceptional command of accents was put to good use — Out of Africa, Plenty, Sophie’s Choice, The House of the Spirits, among a few others. Of course it was just a small aspect of her being an extraordinarily good actress overall.
(She and Emma Thompson are my two favorite actresses — I haven’t decided who is better. Might be a tie?)
The director, Phyllida Lloyd, while not having done much more than “Mamma Mia!” for film, is a highly-acclaimed British theatrical and opera director, so she has a fair chance of doing a good job here. Something to watch out for.

I liked what The Guardian columnist said at the end:
“What next for her after The Iron Lady? The Michelle Obama Story, obviously. A little work on the muscle tone and she’d be set. I’m kidding: Meryl, don’t do it.”
Actually, Meryl should seriously consider it — if she can be Batman, why not Mrs. Obama?

i remember the time when i went looking for her name in the encyclopedia the day after i watched the bridges of madison county..instantaneously, i was a fan..was even too young to understand what was happening in the film..and almost year after year, she was making that encyclopedia obsolete by earning more and more nominations..i’m still waiting for her 5th oscar award, to beat katharine hepburn..really really like her in doubt..

A, B, and
I. Is she wearing prosthetics on her forehead? It’s like the reverse of botox.

Ooops my bad, it’s suppose to be Meryl.

I. I wonder how the Thatcher Effect would affect the photo above.
