How to follow the Azkals
My favorite Azkals fan tweet: “Sana maka-score si Neil Etheridge!”
Not impossible, but highly improbable.
How to follow the Azkals without actually following the Azkals.
I’m having lunch in Serendra when I get a text from esteemed poet-single malt connoisseur-futbol fan LeK, president of Old Heterosexual Guys With Little Girl Crushes On Neil Etheridge.
1350. LeK: Is Myanmar game on, live on TV? What na?
1351. Me: Ngek ngayon ba yon? Channel 23 I think.
1353. LeK: Di nga sur if Myanmar alowd live telecast. Dont even know what tym.
1355. Me: Baket striker ba si Aung San Suu Kyi?
1357. LeK: Tingnan mo nga. Am out e.
1357. Me: Out din, will ask the baklas.
1358. LeK: K pls.
(I call Chus.)
1402. Me: Wala daw. Bawal nga.
1408. LeK: Ngek. Delayd kung ganun. Per ANC
1532. LeK: Neil Ether should spirit Aung SSK outta der in his manly arms.
1533. Me: He’s on the team?
1535. LeK: Last report was dat they askd him 2 reconek 4 Myanmar games.
1537. Me: Are there no other goalies.
1539. LeK: I’m a lil 2 old na 4 dat.
1540. Me: Feeling Albert Camus ba.
1743. LeK: Google Azkals Myanmar, nil nil pa. Neil saving many goals, Myanmar on aggressive attacks.
1759. Me: We should just make 10 Neil clones and field all 11 as one team.
Neil Etheridge’s luggage, photo from his Twitter account. You know what they say about men with big feet: less space in the cabin baggage.
1843. LeK: James Yhsbnd scores past 65th min, Azkals take 1-0 lead!
1851. LeK: James Y scord on 76th min penalty on red card on Myanmar. Just as earthquake hit Manila. 6 min left in game. We’re stil up 1-0.
(I run into Rhett Eala.
Me: Hey your image model scored vs. Myanmar, we’re up 1-0.
Rhett: No, Myanmar scored too, it’s 1-1.)
1936. Me: Ay shet draw.
1939. LeK: Nag foul pala c Greatwich, penalty rin last minute of stoppage.
1946. Me: Footangama. But they can still top the group.
1948. LeK: Juntangina. Free ASSK.

I, too, was frustrated about the Myanmar game – both with the non-broadcast and the outcome. Peste.
But I love it when LeK shows up and text-messages his sports coverage! Can we get him for Wimbledon?

I was frustrated by the draw, but glad that Neil was there to save a truckload of goal attempts by the other team.
Here’s how I got to follow yesterday’s match:
1. Google “azkals” or “#azkals” or dyancastillejo (since she’s in Burma covering the team)
2. When the results page appears, click Realtime on top of the page.
The page will automatically update the results based on Twitter mentions.

I was in the office when the match started. Buti nalang may live blog sa website nila : http://www.azkals.info/
I was too engrossed with it to notice na lumindol! Lol!
I’m happy that they didn’t lose, that’s about my only consolation from this match.
