Going on a reading retreat in August
Laura Miller wrote about reading retreats. You pack some books, go someplace where there are few distractions, and read undisturbed. Where do you go? There’s the Castello di Galeazza in Bologna,

but Italy would be a massive distraction.
There’s the Retreat Svaboda in Gorna, but Bulgaria would be the distraction.
Wait! I know a place that’s much closer, with peace, tranquillity and cozy quarters, where you can read all you want, with quick breaks for meals and walks. You can even read while eating, which I was forbidden to do as a kid so it makes me happy. Or read while walking, as long as you don’t fall into the water.
I’m going to Sitio Remedios in Currimao to read books in the lighthouse with the mermaid!
And take a vacation from the internet! (Though they installed wi-fi three years ago because I insisted.) And listen to the waves crashing!
I will do this in August. First I must finish my book project. In the meantime here’s an account of a reading retreat by No Beaten Path.

Attention: the Blood Meridian Reader Support Group. Can we meet next week, say Thursday July 21 in the early afternoon at Shangri-La in Mandaluyong? Sign up here.

I don’t know which part should make me jealous: the one where you’re going on a reading retreat, or the one where you get to go to a place by the sea (in Ilocos Norte!) to read in a lighthouse with a mermaid in it.
In any case, what a fabulous idea! Do it! *raising glass of kalamansi juice* :)

Haaayyyyy…whenever I go on a retreat or vacation I end up sleeping half the time and all plans of reading, DVD marathon, or exploring just get thrown out of the window.
I hope the time will come that I can impose a long reading retreat on myself without anybody saying “But what about the….?”

Aww, can I bring a friend? He’s part of this reading group, too, and he finished the book way ahead of me. But he was just too intimidated to sign up, but I coaxed him on, and he’s just taking his time, but he said he’ll go.

I’ll join too!
