MMFF Day 2: The only non-fantasy in the lineup. (The review is up.)
How we spent the holidays: Watching the entries to the Metro Manila Film Festival. Read all the reviews here.
There are two movies we still have to watch. We were going to see them today but were greeted with long lines at the cinema. Look, we said we’d watch all of them and we will, but we refuse to line up for Enteng and Panday. So we’re taking a short sanity maintenance break and catching those two at the end of the week.
Judy Ann Santos and Ryan Agoncillo play regular people with regular people problems. What!

I love Eugene Domingo but this MMFF belongs to her. She’s in 3 movies, my goodness (My Househusband, Enteng ng Ina mo and Shake Rattle and Roll part XXXIII hahahaha.)

Makes me think if we have a shortage of actors.
Here are other performers who are in at least two movies.
Eugene Domingo (several)
Boots Anson-Roa (SRR, House Husband)
Agot Isidro (House Husband, YTT)
Carla Abellana (YTT, Asiong)
Perla Bautista (SRR, Asiong)
Jay Manalo (SRR, Asiong)
Since I’ve only seen three movies, there may be more.

As for “House Husband”, surprisingly I liked it. I hadn’t been planning to, but everything else was full at that time so we watched it. It’s not the best thing on the planet, but I thought it was entertaining, relatable (particularly the problem of losing jobs due to mergers), and I love Eugene Domingo and Ryan Agoncillo.
Looks like a close call for us because we were originally planning to watch “Enteng” – I like Ai-Ai but find Vic Sotto corny – and later on I heard “Enteng” was pretty bad.

Meanwhile, I now want to see “Asiong Salonga.” It wasn’t on my list, but I heard a few good word-of-mouth reviews, so I think I may try and see it. And it also just won Best Picture.
If it turns out good, then this may be the first time since the 90’s that the MMFF has awarded a best film based on artistry as opposed to popularity. Here’s hoping it becomes a trend. The MMFF lost its artistic credibility long ago, and it needs to regain it.

“The most minor characters delivering the most inconsequential lines get close-ups. Talking heads? Is there a Best Performance By An Extra award we were not aware of?” –> loving this line
Maybe the close ups were made because the actors were badly blocked and the best way to salvage it was to just show the person talking.
