Is there a singing gene in Pinoys?
Read Operatic singer wins Pinoy talent show in UK.
Our friend Ryan was in the finals of a talent contest in England and we’re totally going to grab the credit. Sure he won karaoke nights in the past, but he hadn’t competed in a while. We stay at his house whenever we’re in London and we notice he’s always singing. While cooking sinigang he’s singing, while folding laundry he’s singing, while waiting for the elevator he’s singing. We said, “You should join a contest.” So there.
We’ve never heard him do Phantom of the Opera, but we’ll vouch for his rendition of Rolling In The Deep. Congratulations! We owe you a fabulous brunch (for losing a Roger-Rafa bet in January).

I read an interview of Lea Salonga long ago, where she revealed that she’s more apprehensive singing here than abroad, because here, almost everyone can carry a tune. I’m thinking it’s cultural as well. We have to be known as the happiest, smilingest (yes, that’s an official word, says this dictionary I bought for 2 pesos) people in the world, and what else proves your happiness best than singing?
Wait. POTO has an unfortunate end. OK, it must be genetics.

Filipinos are conquering the world 1 song at a time http://www.cheezmiss.com/2011/03/are-filipinos-conquering-world-one-song.html
We’re also – or did jessicazafra say this already? – the black people of Asia thus the talent.

Charice said the same thing. She cannot see herself having a career here thus her enrolling in nursing after she didnt win Little Big Star. But StarKing happened, & then Ellen & Tita Oprah & voila!
Maybe because there are so many GOOD singers that they have become so common we’re all ho-hum about them BUT if mediocre talent starts to sing, our ears perk up (& our eyes too specially if they are good-looking). Mediocre singers are so rare thus the reason why we value them so – thus the reason why Judy Ann Santos has an album, Toni Gonzaga’s CD hit platinum(?) and Kim Chiu’s (when she released a Star-Magic) song hit number 1 in the charts but Sarah Geronimo’s was number 3. Yes I was paying attention much.

I work for a Chinese company so I get to travel to China a lot. In Nanjing, I think maybe 9 out of 10 bars show Filipino bands (usually from Cebu). My foreign colleagues (Brit, Belgian, Sri Lankan, Indian, Chinese, etc.) all applaud them — even the really crappy groups that sing even crappier songs!
They know Filipinos sing really really well, and I’m equally pleased and pressured :D
