Our podcast episode 2 is up.
The weekly podcast is available for download or streaming. You can also subscribe to it on iTunes.
We decided to give the whole stack of comics to one reader. julius, they’re all yours, congratulations. Your books have been delivered to the Customer Service counter at National Bookstore, Power Plant Mall, Rockwell, Makati. Just give them your full name.
This week we’re giving away a stack of novels.
The Rachel Papers by Martin Amis, Ripley’s Game by Patricia Highsmith, Atomised (also known as The Elementary Particles) by Michel Houellebecq and Labyrinth by Kate Mosse. We got them all at National Bookstore, where the Cut-Price Sale has been extended until 2 September.
To join the raffle, go to Comments and nominate guests for future podcasts. We should probably inform you that we’re sick of hearing from movie/TV stars, politicians and celebrities—they already pollute own the airwaves—and would prefer to speak to real people with interesting opinions. Like you and your friends. Have you ever told yourself, “Why is that moron on the air? I make so much more sense than he does.” This is your chance to be heard by people who get you. We’ll throw in coffee and snacks.
* * * * *
Thank you for pointing out the error in the streaming feed; no need to froth at the mouth, it’s been fixed. We’ll also post a “How to subscribe to the podcast via iTunes” instructional.
Keep your guest lists coming. You do know that we’ll probably jettison the suggestions and invite whoever we want, right? And we’re a little disappointed at how…practical you are. Doesn’t anyone want to hear Jeffrey Eugenides?
Future guests (We haven’t asked them yet haha):
Walk and Eat on food
Jaemark Tordesilla of Fire Quinito on sports
Pepe Diokno on cinema
Teddy Boy Locsin on rice
Random writers at the Palanca Awards night (We will lurk by the open bar)
A bunch of gay guys review the Bench show
Roby Alampay on journalism
Michael Salientes on fashion
Dr Joven Cuanang on maintaining your brain
Leo Abaya on art
Michael Purugganan on genes

I nominate momelia!
Or if you want strong opinions, maybe some of those Filipino Freethinkers, they got some opinions.
FZA, to me, does not fall under “celebrity” so I nominate him too. Can you also feature Ronnie Lazaro, Lav Diaz and Joel Torre all at the same time? A convo featuring all three is one I want to eavesdrop. Haha
Unfortunately, most of my friends are either socially awkward nerds or closeted gays, so I’m not sure they’d make for chatty podcast guests. :)
August 28th, 2012 at 01:04
Prof. Glecy Atienza, one of the three female playwrights who translated The Vagina Monologues to Tagalog. Her stories about having stalkers are really surprising/amusing. She also has an interesting theory about the friendship dynamics of gay men and a straight women.
August 28th, 2012 at 03:19
The streaming link for episode 2 is the same as episode 1 but the download link for episode 2 works.
I nominate Danton and Momelia!
August 28th, 2012 at 04:06
At first I thought of nominating myself but I think hearing Bob Ong would be a bit more interesting.
August 28th, 2012 at 04:56
Neil Garcia, the diva!
August 28th, 2012 at 08:15
I highly nominate acclaimed Filipino authors like Danton Remoto, Eros Atalia, or the elusive Bob Ong. I also nominate one of the best bloggers in the nation, the Professional Heckler. And for sheer audacity, I also highly nominate myself. :) We could talk about anything.
August 28th, 2012 at 08:57
Historical Smackdown with Ambeth Ocampo and Manuel L. Quezon III (part 1) and Ige Ramos and Carlos Celdran (part 2), curated by you and Budjette. I want to hear that. Or not even a smackdown, I just want to hear them getting giddy with Filipino history (past to pop).
Or your veterinarian/pet enthusiast guest in the past who lived with so many dogs and other pets. I just want to know if the pets are ok and if it’s still possible to live like that.
August 28th, 2012 at 09:07
Hi J!
I could not find you on itunes. I tried search words, “jesica rules the universe” and “jessica zafra.” Nothing came up.
I nominate Patricia Evangelista and/or Leloy Claudio. They used to debate in college, so to say they’re opinionated would be an understatement. They’re both smart, witty and polemical. Both are in their late 20s. They can talk about anything under the sun. It would be interesting to hear new, young voives.
Pat produces a TV documentary and writes a weekly column but. Leloy teaches History at the Ateneo and occasionally contributes to gma news online.
August 28th, 2012 at 09:19
Noel Vera, Dodo Dayao, Phil Dy, Richard Bolisay & Oggs Cruz. Okay, that was a lot but I’d like to hear them discuss the absence of polemics in this country. It would also be interesting to listen to them disagree, then agree to disagree.
August 28th, 2012 at 10:45
Carlos Celdran. Now that’s a conversation I’d want to listen in.
August 28th, 2012 at 13:27
Atty. Raymond Alikpala, author of “Of God and Men”.
August 28th, 2012 at 13:41
Saturnino Fabros and Robert Carabuena on Metro Manila traffic and road rage as an effect of cigarette smoking.
August 28th, 2012 at 14:36
I’d like to hear from Dino Ignacio again… AND your ex-co-host Little David… :))
August 28th, 2012 at 14:38
I nominate Teddy Boy Locsin.
August 28th, 2012 at 14:40
A random cabbie, because cab drivers always have something to say.
August 28th, 2012 at 15:03
Maybe get your guardian angels of gayness (gayrdian angels?) and do a state of the nation or metro podcast. Give us your take on what’s trending in politics, finance, showbiz, etc. JZ and Budjet (yes, without the -te) can act as moderators but you may also opt to hijack the discussion at any time ala Debate w Mare at Pare or KrisTv.
Among the readers I wouldn’t mind having (in no order of preference) Momelia, Swanoepel (?sp), Brewhuh, Stellalehua (?sp) and turmukoy as panelists in the aforementioned set-up.
August 28th, 2012 at 15:06
i meant in no particular order, hihi sorry.
August 28th, 2012 at 15:15
teddy boy locsin? –an interesting politician.
dean jorge bocobo?
the guy who runs the manolo shoe blogs?
chot reyes, if you are into basketball. this guy lead the philippines to the championship in the recent jones cup 2012, beating the americans.
August 28th, 2012 at 17:11
Good idea, greeneggsnham! We should do a podcast for our 6th anniversary in September featuring Momelia, swanepoel, brewhuh23, stellalehua, turmukoy and you.
August 28th, 2012 at 18:03
Martin Amis, so he can elaborate on his fascinating comment about the need to be “retarded” to write children stories.
August 28th, 2012 at 20:29
There’s a suggestion. He has a new book out and so does Ian McEwan. New books mean promotional tours, speaking engagements, interviews with media. Paging National Bookstore.
August 28th, 2012 at 20:50
I nominate Hada Queen Charities, Incorporated (HQCI) founder and chair person [the epitome of class & èlan] Anna Sophia Swanepoel together with Mahal [the actress] gusto ko ulit itanong sa kanya kung totoo yung joke na naglabasan [walang malisya ]
Mahal: ”chupa, mahilig chalaga ako cha chupa…ancharap kachi minchan machulog cha chupa…….SABI NIYA AY SOFA

Jessica and greeneggsnham: Challenge accepted! I like the idea of an all-reader panel session on the podcast, especially for the blog anniversary. We should definitely get a group going for that, and soon.
And yes, Ian McEwan – this really needs to happen, too. I would also love to see Malcolm Gladwell on that list, if only to hear him get called out on all the stuff from Outliers that gets misquoted by inspirational writers and speakers here in Manila.
On a more local note, I’m putting in another vote for The Professional Heckler (aka Loi Reyes Landicho), if only for the guaranteed Internet meltdown as soon as everyone finds out that he will be in the same room with Jessica *and* Budjette.
Other ideas:
– Nella Sarabia
– Nanay Socorro Ramos (my Mom would love this)
– The anonymous Twitter user behind @superstarmarian (who still gets mistaken for the real Marian Rivera online… and gets into epic wars because of it)
– A writer from any of the teleseryes currently running on air (would be a great discussion on the creative process… or the lack of it)
– Any expat who has written novels or stories about the Philippines
In the “Only in the Parallel Universe” list: Benedict Cumberbatch, because he owes us all an explanation. Basta, magpaliwanag lang siya, kahit walang dahilan.
August 28th, 2012 at 22:24
I humbly accept the nomination. Echos!
August 28th, 2012 at 22:27
a person by the name of j.dennis who loves and knows everything about jazz. he’s an amateur sax player. and he loves to talk.
August 28th, 2012 at 23:17
Mr. Amis also has amazing views on nuclear weapons (couched in pedantic, beautiful short stories; we could just ask him to explain himself).
August 28th, 2012 at 23:35
some late additions:
Toto Gonzales – the blogger behind remembrance of things awry who chronicles Filipino genealogies and a little chismis on the side.
Reinabelle Reyes – physicist from pisay
Michiko Yamamoto – just because i have this slight girl crush on her. Hihihi
August 28th, 2012 at 23:36

Butch Dalisay, please! Because he can talk about almost everything! And of course, Teddyboy Locsin.
August 29th, 2012 at 12:54
Haha, exciting yang podcast na yan! Naku, pano kaya eksena natin dun anoh? English only ba? Haha, di ko ma-imagine! Looking forward to it!
Wala akong maisip na magandang guest eh. Pero kung kailangan eh siguro Any Random Up and Coming (haha) Pinoy “Singer” (haha) na walang ibang alam gawin kundi mag-“remake” ng mga current pop songs.
Haha!
August 29th, 2012 at 13:08
Pfweh.
August 29th, 2012 at 14:15
We’ve been asking Padre Ferriols for an interview since 2000 but he’s always declined and now he’s not in good health.
August 29th, 2012 at 14:17
Danton is on the radio every single day.
August 29th, 2012 at 14:39

August 29th, 2012 at 19:39
Maybe the well respected Don Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala talking about his quirky side? So we’ll know that at some point, he’s also the same Homo sapiens like us!
August 29th, 2012 at 22:30
We can record the podcast with the readers volunteered by greeneggsnham on September 21, 7pm at our “studio” in Makati. Are you free then? We’ll order dinner from JT’s Manukan.
August 29th, 2012 at 22:31
julius: Yeah it’ll be like getting a sermon from your dad.
August 30th, 2012 at 07:55

August 30th, 2012 at 08:53
Booking September 21 in advance now! Fridays are free for me (more often than not) and I can do most of my stuff during office hours. Only caveat being that I have to on the road to QC by 10:00 or so.
August 30th, 2012 at 12:38
Ditto Butch Dalisay. He could bring his friend, Leigh Ramos, ad creative and awesome calligrapher, and they can talk about modern English in the Philippines, lit, art, writing, calligraphy, and their fabulous pens.
August 30th, 2012 at 20:47
Yes to the proposed date and time!
Excited!
Have you tried JT’s leche flan? I believe it’s the best item on their menu!:)
