Poll: Your all-time favorite Filipino movies (Updated constantly)
After writing a column about Vertigo we got to thinking about the Filipino movies we love and watch over and over again (or would watch over and over again if we knew where to get a copy). So we compiled a list of our favorite Filipino movies, then asked our friends to do the same. These are very personal lists, with no consideration for greatness or cinematic achievement. No pressure! We just love them.
The movies are in no particular order. We asked everyone for ten, and they ended up citing more. These lists are subject to change by the hour.

Tarsan vs Tansan. Vic Vargas vs. Dolphy.
Boboy’s List (with annotations)
Kung Mangarap Ka’t Magising by Mike De Leon. Baguio before it became baduy. Jun Latonio’s Umaga na naman (Boyet can sing!). Boyet before he became the Nicolas Cage of the Philippines. Moody Diaz. Hilda, the loveliest Filipino actress ever.
Lollipops and Roses at Burong Talangka by Elwood Perez. “Where’s the bains? The bains?!”, sabi ng na-e-ebs na Ate Guy. The bathtub scene where Ate Guy quickly sings along with Cocoy Laurel to “Loving You” without her ever hearing Minnie Ripperton before.
Maynila: Sa Mga Kuko ng Liwanag by Lino Brocka. The saddest movie ever, but I always join Julio Madiaga’s journey every time it’s on.
Ganito Kami Noon, Paano Kayo Ngayon by Eddie Romero. Again, Boyet as Kulas, before he discovered William Shatner. Gloria Diaz’s non-acting. Fiel Zabat’s art direction.
Salawahan by Ishmael Bernal. Nothing is wittier. “Mas guapo ka pala kaysa sinabi nila sa akin.” “Kaya hindi ako nakikinig sa chismis eh.”
Shake, Rattle and Roll 2: Aswang episode. Who would’ve thought I’d root for Mane Reynes? Scariest horror film.
Tarsan vs. Tansan. Chichay was overlooked for an Oscar.
High School Circa ’65. Roderick must be forgiven for his crimes as QC councilor on account of his contribution to Philippine cinema.
Dance-o-Rama 60. Prettiest bunch of teenagers ever: Joe Mari, Swanie, Bert Leroy, Rosemarie, Dindo, etc. Most inspired name for a supporting character: Mrs. Payme, the landlady.
Tatlo, Dalawa, Isa: Bukas, Madilim Bukas episode. “Sakeeem! Sakeeem!”
Leo’s list
Salawahan by Ishmael Bernal
Moral by Marilou Diaz-Abaya
Ang Tatay Kong Nanay by Lino Brocka
Salome by Laurice Guillen

Kisapmata by Mike de Leon
Itanong Mo Sa Buwan by Chito Roño
Kubrador by Jeffrey Jeturian
Manila by Night by Ishmael Bernal
Batang West Side by Lav Diaz
Juan’s list
Insiang. “Brocka’s best.”
Kisapmata. “Vic Silayan was so scary. Our own Hannibal Lecter.”
Minsa’y Isang Gamu-gamo. “The film was allowed public showing only because the Marcoses feared Nora’s popularity.”
Bayaning Third World by Mike De Leon. “So sad this film was not seen by more people.”
Maynila Sa Kuko Ng Liwanag
Sister Stella L by Mike De Leon. “Vilma unforgettable as an activist nun.”
Oro Plata Mata. If this were shortened by 30 minutes, this could be one of the greatest. Fides Cuyugan’s plea to the many statues of saints she had to leave behind while fleeing the Japanese soldiers is classic.
Himala. “Okay, I can only come up with 8.”

Post your list! Pardina at Ang Mga Duwende? The John Lloyd Cruz filmography? The Tito, Vic and Joey oeuvre? (Tito Sotto is on a roll! Serves the electorate right for voting in the non-essential member of TVJ—not the smart one, not the one who is shockingly good-looking in person, but the other one.)

This could take forever. :) It will take time to recall all the faves, but these would include the original “Working Girls,” the original “Temptation Island,” and “Zombadings.”
Not a comprehensive list, but others I would include from classic times are the following.
Horror
Gabi Ng Lagim
Shake Rattle Roll 1
Shake Rattle Roll 2
Lovingly Yours, Helen (the Julie Vega segment)
Comedy
Maria Went To Town
Inday, Inday Sa Balitaw
Inday Bote
Jack En Jill
Action/Fantasy
Supergirl
Darna (1991, Nanette Medved – although it’s because we always have a blast laughing at this movie)
Ninja Kids (guilty pleasure)
Drama
Scorpio Nights
Sana’s Wala Nang Wakas
Dekada ’70
—
Not surprisingly, most of my faves come from pre-2000s, as the 2000s just really showed some major deterioration in quality of many local films.
Stillm in the 2000s, there have been some that I did like:
Sigaw
Ang Pamana: The Inheritance (strictly speaking, a Fil-Canadian horror film, but I always consider it very much Pinoy)
Crying Ladies
One Night Only (it surprised me)
Bridal Shower
Mourning Girls
Duda/Doubt
—
I also appreciate how, in the last 3-5 years, we’ve had an increase in quality films that are mostly non-mainstream, making me feel the industry isn’t completely hopeless.
Zombadings: Patayin sa Shokot si Remington
Manila Kingpin: Asiong Salonga
Kimmy Dora
Ang Babae Sa Septic Tank
Here Comes The Bride
Yanggaw
Altar
I also thoroughly enjoyed “I Do Bidoo Bidoo,” release this past week, though I’m not yet sure if it will make my list in the long run. And I am looking forward to “Tiktik: The Aswang Chronicles.”

September 2nd, 2012 at 18:53
My current list:
– Kakabakaba Ka Ba? (which I’m re-watching right now – thanks for the link!)
– Salawahan
– Relasyon
– Working Girls
– Babangon Ako’t Dudurugin Kita
– Nagalit Ang Buwan Sa Haba Ng Gabi
– Kimmy Dora
– John en Marsha sa Amerika
– Hihintayin Kita sa Langit
– A Love Story
– Mano Po 2
– Any teen comedy that came out in the mid-’80s (Bagets 1 and 2, Hot Shots, Di Bale Na Lang, etc.)
– Temptation Island (I’m counting the original and the remake as one movie)
– American Adobo (which I thought I would hate, but turned out to be funny)
– Maria Went to Town/ Super Inday and the Golden Bibe (tied)
And then there are the movies I need to see:
– Zombadings
– Ang Nawawala
– Himala
– Burlesk Queen
– Tulad ng Dati
– The Debut
– Pisay (which I think is still on sale at Pisay)
– Senior High (Jerrold Tarog went to school with my old childhood friends, and some of the characters are based on them)
– Ang Babae sa Septic Tank (because my Mom wants to see it, and also because of a review I read on one of the overseas film blogs where the reviewer saw this and Captive on the same day)
– The Mistress (looks better than No Other Woman, at least)

Crying Ladies (Ate Shawie should do more comedy)
Tanging Ina (hindi kasali yung mga sumunod)
Booba (pag umiibig masustansya)
Kris Aquino’s Greatest Hits (may sarili siyang “subcategory”)
Salamat Cinema One subcategory:
Temptation Island (rabadabdab two betches in a tab)
September 2nd, 2012 at 21:04

Oh, my goodness, I completely forgot about Jose Rizal by Marilou Diaz-Abaya. Loved that movie, too. The casting was pitch perfect; Cesar Montano was a brilliant choice for Rizal, and Joel Torre should play Simoun if they ever adapt El Fili into a full-length movie, or at least an epic HBO-worthy miniseries. (Am I the only person who thought Gardo Versoza was an excellent choice for Andres Bonifacio?)
Also: Good gravy, 14 Going Steady. And Tender Age. And When I Fall in Love, with every single Regal Baby in the stable – including Chuckie Dreyfus, who gets paired (IIRC) with Sheryl Cruz?
Now that I think of it, Vic and Joey did make better movies without Tito. See: Starzan and the entire Enteng Kabisote series.

Okay, people who watched Maria Went to Town: What was the song used in the musical number where Maricel (as Mary) duets with Gary V while both of them are wearing spiky troll-doll wigs? Part of me thinks that it might be one of the edgier New Wave bands that nobody hears outside of certain radio stations in Manila, but I could be wrong.

My entire childhood flashed before my eyes. It’s inevitable. Maids would bring us to watch Filipino flicks every other Saturdays at a local cineplex in Sta. Cruz.

Shake, Rattle and Roll 1 – The “Manananggal” episode. I thought the “Frigidaire” episode is originally penned by a pinoy. until I watched the 70s American film at the Hallmark channel.
Cofradia – The Gloria Romero- Ramon Revilla classic. The “instant bleach” magic candle when lighted…puputi ka in seconds!
Dahil sa Isang Bulaklak – Charito Solis, Ric Rodrigo (tama nga ba?) and Rod Navarro. They should have killed Rod twice!!!
Haplos – Vilma Santos, Christopher De Leon and Rio Locsin – The haunting Aurora.
Supergirl- Pinky Montilla. The battle with the giant reptile. Frog or lizard? Palaka yata!
Tagos ng Dugo – Vilma Santos. I thought a case of Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder but why becoming sex psychopath during menstruation and not 3 days before the onset of the period? Maybe a different case. Anyways, enough for the men killed – being punished for casual sex while “the red flag is on”
Pamilya Dimagiba – the 1982 Flash Elorde movie with hunky children of different mothers. George Estregan’s bit appearance in the end as the gay son from a manicurista was hilarious!
High School Scandal – Gina Alajar, Sandy Andolong, Greggy Liwag – The music “High School Life” of Sharon was thetheme song yata.
Sandalang Bahay – Indie film. Travelling with your dead mother inside the car made me laugh.
Feng Shui – the way Lotlot died on top of the Red Horse beer cases.
Ganda Babae, Ganda Lalaki – Rene Requiestas and Maricel Laxa – our neighbor Mang Andoy died of a fatal heart attack inside the cinema laughing… Unforgettable! I was second year high school back then and on my way home from school. Nasalubong ko sya. He asked me what movie to watch, I suggested that. Two hours later, two policemen came to their house. He was dead on arrival at the ER of MCU Hospital! March 1990 yun!
