Dredd and Dreadful
Dredd. Brusque, extremely violent, hardly original but efficient. (No, we have not seen The Raid.) Life after apocalypse: bleak and decrepit. All we see of Karl Urban is his chin and he’s still badass. As he is battling Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey) he’d better be. Oddly, the humor comes from Dredd’s total absence of humor.
Ruby Sparks. Viewer barfs. Eet toe cute we want to euthanize them. There’s a way to do surreal: Charlie Kaufman does it, Spike Jonze, Wes Anderson. Woody Allen does it all the time. What you do is, you carry on as if nothing is out of the ordinary. You don’t point it out constantly like a freshman doing a book report.

Ruby Sparks sounds like a reiteration of (500) Days of Summer: twee and trying hard to be quotable, but it probably won’t stop me from watching it on a constant loop if it was on cable.
Can’t pass judgement on Dredd – still have bad memories of the Stallone version – but I do want to see The Raid. Violent action movie set in Jakarta? Sold.

stella, I thought Ruby Sparks took a shot at that overused movie trope popularized by “Summer” – The Manic Pixie Dream Girl. Sa local tv, parang ganito: http://tinyurl.com/d4o3fgq.
MPDG do exist in the real world but they are annoying and less adorable in real life.

Being Twee and Precious as an affectation surely has its limits. I used to think it was cute on Zoey Deschanel. That was until it got annoying on her TV show. I’d say the same for her Siri iPhone ad (“Is that rain?”-*barf*). Sometimes one does wonder if women that do this to be cute and all are even all up there in the cabeza to begin with?

@misterluspo: Hahaha! I’ve only seen a few eps of Be Careful With My Heart, but Jodi Sta. Maria as an MPDG is dead-on. I’ve seen a lot of them in Koreanovelas and Taiwanese romantic comedies, too
Somebody once said (and I’ll try to be diplomatic here) that when MPDGs grow up, they only become more neurotic and troublesome, on top of being annoying. I won’t be surprised if it gets worse when babies come into the picture.

Have you seen Ang Nawawala? Eet toe cute, too. Barfable but there are good jokes and the Rocco twins might rock your world. They look so much like tito Bembol!
