Favorite Books survey results: You like medieval fantasy, regretful cheaters and unreliable narrators.
The results of our extremely informal, unscientific, arbitrary survey of our readers’ favorite books from 2011-2012:
1. A Dance With Dragons by George R.R. Martin
2. This Is How You Lose Her by Junot Diaz
The Sense Of An Ending by Julian Barnes
3. The Art of Fielding by Chad Harbach
Casual Vacancy by J.K. Rowling
4. 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami
5. Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn
11/22/63 by Stephen King
Zone One by Colson Whitehead
At Last by Edward St. Aubyn
The Stranger’s Child by Alan Hollinghurst
Telegraph Avenue by Michael Chabon
Bring Up The Bodies by Hilary Mantel
Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs
The Fault In Our Stars by John Green got a lot of votes but we excluded Young Adult titles, being neither young nor adult. Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell also got a lot of votes, but it was published in 2004. (See, movie adaptations are good, if only because they remind readers of books they may have missed.)
The winners of the raffle are #2 Solace, #3 angus25, and #15 ruth. Congratulations, you each get Php1,000 worth of National Bookstore gift certificates and eight books from this stack. Post your choices in Comments; if you want the same books talk amongst yourselves.

Haven’t read any in the list, although I do have a copy of the Chabon book. Only new books I read are C. Moore’s Scare Bleu, and A. Mccall Smith’s Limpopo Academy.
Walang pumili sa kanila in the informal survey, but these are exquisitely-written books. Moore’s absurdly funny, and Smith’s book has a very languorous rhythm to it. It’s like sitting under the shade of an acacia tree on a summer afternoon, sipping unobtrusive cold tea with a friend sharing a comfortable silence with you.
Too bad I have to stop and work.

Wow, this is a surprise. Thanks a lot! Here are my picks:
Narcopolis by Jeet Thayil
The Sisters Brothers by Patrick Dewitt
Imperial Bedrooms by Bret Easton Ellis
I’m good with these three, but I’m hoping that Solace would let go of Emerald City by Jennifer Egan and/or Snow Country by Yasunari Kawabata. :D

ruth: That’s 9. We’ll keep History of A Pleasure Seeker if it’s alright.
November 27th, 2012 at 20:32
angus25: If you don’t mind, we’ll give the Elmore Leonard and the music book to a friend who’s into the stuff. We’ll give the remaining hardcovers to Solace.
November 27th, 2012 at 22:24
I don’t mind that. At least someone’s going to read them.
November 27th, 2012 at 22:30
Ooops! Sorry. Yes, I’m okay with that. Thanks again for the books Jessica!

Thanks, angus25. When your schedule permits, give Elmore Leonard a try. He writes clean, effortless, almost anti-literary prose. Good for clearing the palate.
