Heeehee, “flaming vagina.” And the van that my cousin and I rode on for our LOTR tour of Wellington was called Figwit, which still makes me giggle.
It has been twenty years since I first read The Hobbit, and I was probably too young to appreciate it. Watching this now makes me feel like I’ve rediscovered my geekdom.

I commend the Thorin actor. His eyes manage to speak louder than all the hair and beards combined.

Where’s the dividing line between geekdom and religion? Middle Earth is Jerusalem and the mystery of Tom Bombadil’s true identity is the Holy Grail. Why Frodo over him as the protector of the Ring? Will Bombadil make an appearance in the Hobbit trilogy? (Peter Jackson left him out in LOTR) Will he be as kooky as Radagast?
I was really hoping for Silmarillon to be the next movie(s) in the franchise. It’s good for at least 7 installments. Back in the day when mIRC ruled over Cyber Earth, my nick was Telperion.

@pho3nixs, regarding Tom Bobadil:
If I remember my FOTR right, that was an option discussed during the Council of Elrond. However, Gandalf nixed the idea.
Tom is the eldest being (or one of the eldest), predating Elves and others, and he was not affected by the ring at all (he wore it, and he also saw Frodo even when Frodo wore it). He thus did not care much for the affairs of Middle Earth.
Gandalf was concerned that if the ring was left in Tom’s care, he would misplace it because he did not really understand nor care about its value since for Tom it was of no consequence and useless.

Yes, when I learned it will be a trilogy, my initial reaction is that he may be pulling a George Lucas. But I have too much faith with Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens. The way they did with LOTR, coherently mixed the main storyline with the appendices while removing some chapters for the story to properly progress, is just awesome. Yes, there are very long novels that turned into a 2-hour movies, but there are also movies that are based from short stories. So I still believe with PJ. Who knows, we may be seeing Tom Bombadil this time.

@allancarreon… Tolkien did say he intended Tom B to be a mystery. So we’re never really going to get to the bottom of it. If he does make a future appearance, will all his lines be sung?
Also, how will Peter Jackson visually render the chorus of the Valar that created Middle Earth? Will Melkor’s contrapuntal syncopation be rendered a la Dave Brubeck? The questions, the questions. Was Tom B the first being birthed by that chorus? Is he the embodiment of the spirit of the Middle Earth?
Who was first to think about creation through song. Tolkien or his friend CS Lewis? Will Jon Snow live? LOL. These people borrow from another like they all sniffed the same stuff.

in scott garceau’s the x-pat files (23 december 2012), hobbit forming, he wrote Gandolf, instead of Gandalf, twice within the article, and on the caption of the picture of Gandalf.
he did say that he has NOT read all the LOTR books, but seriously, Gandolf instead of Gandalf???
hmm, maybe he watched pirated versions of the LOTR trilogy with the really atrocious, so bad it’s funny, subtitles??? “grandalf, grandalf”…..
