“It was a turning point in his career, but he did not know it.”
We can still see The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey during the Metro Manila Film Festival. As far as we know, Sisterakas and the other MMFF entries are not available in IMAX 3D, so IMAX theatres will continue showing The Hobbit this month.
Last year we reviewed all the MMFF entries—a quest that nearly took our life. We are still deciding whether to repeat the process this year. Vivien, who normally encourages us to watch everything, now fears what may awaken in the darkness of Khazad-dûm. Thus far we have seen the trailers for just three MMFF movies: the much-awarded Thy Womb, the horror movie starring Enchong Dee with a beard, and “Everything ends except…Shake, Rattle and Roll”. Which ones do you intend to see?
P.S. It just occurred to us that Thranduil, the elk-riding Elvenking in the movie, is the father of Legolas. And that one of the Dwarves, Gloin, is the father of Gimli.
Then we remembered the casualty rate. Aaaaaaaaaa
Hilarious: the 13 Dwarves ranked according to hotness. Everyone disagrees.

I was half-expecting a baby!Legolas to appear!

Is IMAX running the 48fps version?

Please watch the Rurouni Kenshin movie as well. I think it’s on its last week. Showing in SM Cinemas (Salamat, SM!) It’s a really good film. Sabi nga ni Jessica, “One does not simply walk into Tolkien.” Eto naman – One does not simply walk into fanboy territory.

Yay IMAX! Too bad Les Miserables isn’t on IMAX either, otherwise it would’ve been a convenient loophole for my friends who are dying of jealousy that our other pals will get to watch it while we can’t.
That said, I still think that this is one of the stronger MMFF slates in the past few years. Thy Womb looks good, as well as the Emilio Aguinaldo biopic. I would even line up for the Enteng/Agimat/Juday movie, but the title makes me wonder if Vic Sotto and Bong Revilla had accidentally wandered into a movie about Maria Teresa Carlson. (It also doesn’t help that there’s a TV ad that has a few senators endorsing the movie, which looks like it was shot during a break in the proceedings to pass the RH and FOI bills last night.)
But… Sosy Problems? Really?

Preciousss can’tsss wait for the next two moviesesss.
Thranduil only appeared for a few seconds in this movie and he already left an impression of smugness on me. There will be more of him in the next two movies and I wonder what he would look like wearing a crown of leaves as he feasts with his people in the forest of Mirkwood.
I am also curious to see how the Silvan elves differ from the Sindarin on-screen.

@yourethestorm: Orlando Bloom is signed up for the succeeding movie/s, so yes, we will see a non-baby Legolas (he IS several hundreds old as of LOTR, if I recall my readings right, though still young as far as Elves go).
I guess Peter Jackson couldn’t resist given Thranduil is there. Makes me wonder if he won’t try to insert Gimli, too, given Gloin is present, but I don’t think I’ve seen any news about that.
The guy who plays Thranduil, by the way, was in “Breaking Dawn, Part 2.” Thank goodness he’s redeeming himself by being in “The Hobbit” series.

As for MMFF –
“The Strangers” looks promising. I hope it’s not a case of trailer-great-movie-awful. First I heard of it, I thought it was a remake of that Liv Tyler / Scott Speedman horror-thriller a few years back. In any case, I hope it’s not yet another re-do of the “Bayan ng Aswang” story already done wonderfully by SRR2, but we’ll see.
The Aguinaldo one might be worth catching, too – especially since last year’s Asong Salonga was surprisingly good – for a George Estregan, Jr. movie at that.
“Thy Womb” – probably will see what the fuss is about.
SRR – likely awful. However, it’s sort of become a tradition for me and my friends to catch it regardless of how awful it turns out to be – at least we usually get a good laugh. Occasionally, they produce a good segment (though it hasn’t happened in years).
Other than those, I’ll probably pass on the rest. I like Ai-Ai, but Vice Ganda has just become one-note and insufferable lately, and I think Ai-Ai hit her high with “Tanging Ina,” so I’m not sure I want to sit through another Vice movie at this point.

Oh, and as for the 13 Dwarves’ Hotness Meter…
Bofur ahead of Thorin? Really? Oh, well, to each his own, I guess :)
It’s always a toss up between Kili, Fili, and Thorin for me for the Top 3. They change ranks every so often, but most of the time, Kili comes out on top, followed by Fili, then Thorin.

I can’t wait to see “Farmer Giles of Ham” into a trilogy, and “The Silmarillion” into a 10-part mini-series. Riddles in the dark… go PJ & Co., do it!

“Last year we reviewed all the MMFF entries—a quest that nearly took our life”
This made me laugh out loud in the office. Thank you.
Please embark on the quest once more!

Hindi maaari! Bakit #4 lang si Thorin? Oo, paborito ko ang number 4 pero bakit doon lang siya? Matagal ko na kasing crush si Richard Armitage. No amount of glorious facial hair can cover that pretty face.
