MMFF Moviethon Day 3: Holy crap, a real horror movie!
In the MMFF! Amazing!
Summary: The upteenth rendition of the family-goes-on-an-excursion-then-their-van-breaks-down-in-the-middle-of-nowhere story proceeds to take the audience somewhere else. Genuinely creepy. Ignore Enchong Dee’s ridiculous beard and put him in an action movie.
Rating: 3.5 stars.
Recommendation: Watch!

Agreed. :) I liked this movie (though a friend of mine hated it), and it’s too bad it’s one of the more overlooked films in favor of more awful MMFF fare.
However, I do think it ended too abruptly – probably because, as another reviewer put it, it was “built on a twist,” thereby causing the story to suddenly end with a few unresolved questions.

(Semi-spoilerish? but not quite) Like, what did the recruiter see to make him react that way? What about the bridge woman? I also think Enchong Dee’s character was unnecessary, and the film could’ve survived without his thread.

Regardless, it was indeed creepy, horrific, and unique. It also had awesome cinematography and good production values.
The acting was also great, including that of the new gen (Enrique, JM, and Enchong, although I think Julia Montes occasionally did seem to be go the way of the constipated-school-of-acting) but especially of the veterans.
Janice provided a great balance of humor and fear (poor woman, has been in at least 5 horror movies this year, and always rarely catches a break), Johnny Revilla was effective even if he sometimes seemed to be munching on his words, and of course Jimmy Fabregas is Jimmy Fabregas.
And most of all, Cherry Pie Picache should have won that Best Supporting Actress trophy.
All in all, this is one of the better entries in an MMFF that has largely been commercialized trash this year. Sure, this was also commercialized, but at least it was well done.

allancarreon: Bad news. The Strangers has been pulled out of some theatres including Power Plant, and replaced with Sisterakas. Apparently it was underperforming. The two movies have the same distributor.
