House of Cards and the very near future of content
We’re addicted to House of Cards starring Kevin Spacey as a scheming United States Congressman. Quick pegs: Evil West Wing, Game of Thrones in DC, Richard III (a Spacey specialty). Never play nice people again, Kevin, we don’t buy it. Robin Wright is terrific; every time we see her we want to punch Sean Penn in the face.
Yeah it’s a remake of a British series and the Brit original is better blah blah blah. But House of Cards is more than an addictive series. It didn’t originate on TV or cable; it’s produced by Netflix. The delivery system now produces its own content. We’re seeing the beginning of a great shift here.
Read House of Cards and the Decline of Cable in the New Yorker.

I have been watching this at 1-episode-per-week pace (in time for the weekly Onion avclub review) so I’m still not done with the series. I find I actualy prefer it that way. I tried watching the original Brit series but I think it may be too dated for me. Plus, the Spacey counterpart does not quite have his charm IMO.

This show is evil in a good way. I have seen the whole season three times already. LOL. Can NOT wait for the 2nd season. The acting is impeccable (Robin Wright truly is delectable). Even the opening credits deserves its own blog for people to praise it over and over again. And Kevin Spacey’s subtle Southern accent is awesome. I was trying to find some critic’s description of it that I read not long ago but Google doesn’t want to be my friend today. It was something like “like sipping sweet tea and mint julep on your porch on a hot day” or something like that.
David Fincher is on a roll!!!
BTW, the great Roger Ebert passed away.
