Add to destination list: Iceland
Litlanesfoss, Iceland, photo by Wild Wonders of Europe in the National Geographic
We know nothing of Iceland except that it’s the location for the scenes Beyond The Wall in our favorite TV series. But we found this unlabeled picture we saved from the National Geographic last year, and it turns out to be a photo of waterfalls in Iceland.
Now we have to go to Iceland.

Include Myvatn in your itinerary of Iceland (recommended by a former colleague, an Icelandic geology professor). It is a 12-hour drive from Reykjavik but worth it.
Waterfalls – as one advertisement said, they will make you feel as if the Niagara needs Viagra.
The tap water there is the freshest I’ve ever tried. Still my most favourite country to visit. Hindi nalalayo sa ganda ng Pilipinas.

I read my message above and I thought, we hadn’t driven 24 hours then surely. Just checked my journal from 2008 when we went, the 12-hour drive is actually from and back to Reykjavik :)

Carl of The Simpsons (Lenny’s best friend) is Icelandic, and the recent episodes had them coming to Reykjavik.

deckshoes: Ayyy 6-hour drive going there. No trains? Long drives in small, enclosed vehicles make us homicidal. Any interesting stops?

Hi J, much of the country looked wild to me so I doubt if there are trains for that kind of distance, even the roads looked pretty new. No trains, and no trees, either! But I could be wrong. I think there are buses. We stopped whenever we found something interesting (lava formations, pseudo craters, etc.). And of course, when you are driving very late at night, the farther you are from the city, the more chances of seeing the Northern Lights at the right time of the year. But then don’t go when it’s too cold, your camera batteries won’t survive it :)
Around Reykjavik was great as well. Geysirs, glaciers, black beaches. Aside from Myvatn, I loved Thingvellir National Park. You will find yourself actually walking on the (widening) rift in between the Eurasian and the North American Tectonic Plates (somehow making Iceland a part of North America). Never the sporty type it was only there that I got to try horseback-riding as the Icelandic horses – direct descendants of Viking and Norse horses – are quite small. It’s always a good subject at cocktail parties, that experience of riding a horse in the Icelandic countryside amidst rain and wind :-P
You’ll probably get nature-vertigo but I just think you’ll love the country.

You might be interested in watching the music documentary Heima. It features music by the band Sigur Ros as much as the beautiful sights of Iceland. Visual and aural delight at the same time.
