Who wins the Game of Thrones?
There are only four episodes left in Season 4, then a year-long wait for Season 5. We may have to wait longer than that for George R.R. Martin to publish book six of A Song of Ice and Fire, The Winds of Winter. Experience has shown that nagging GRRM to write faster does not work; worse, he reacts to the whingeing by taking on more side projects.
The history of Westeros, out in October
Showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have said that they know how the story ends. It is likely that the TV series will end before the books do. It is not likely that the HBO series will go on hiatus in order to wait for the two remaining books to be written. The child actors are growing fast—good thing Isaac Hempstead-Wright, who plays Bran Stark, is seated all the time because he’s now as tall as the adults.
The current season features events from the second half of A Storm of Swords, and from A Feast For Crows and A Dance With Dragons, which are simultaneous in the Westerovian timeline, having been the same book until GRRM chopped it in two. (Hence the early appearance of Reek, for instance.) We have no problem with the way the TV series diverges from the source material—for instance, the way Vargo Hoat became Locke, who became involved in the lives of two characters linked by crippling. There was a controversy over the apparent rape at the wake, which may or may not have happened in A Storm of Swords, where the scene is told from Jaime’s POV. That is a murderous, incestuous pair—they cannot be expected to behave. Yes, there is plenty of violence against women on the show—that is the world they live in, and that is what Arya, Daenerys, Brienne and the other female characters are up against, making their triumphs especially awesome.
We like the changes to the character of Shae, who in the books is a simple whore. On the show she is smart and fiercely loyal—when she told Varys that she would kill for Sansa, it took us by surprise. It would not bother us at all if the show’s writers change Shae’s storyline, in fact we hope they do. (Also, we hope Syrio Forel is still alive.) The Jaime and Brienne romance is hinted at in the series (mostly through lingering glances), but it is, shall we say, non-canonical. The almost-encounters of the Stark siblings are heart-rending.
With the recent revelation as to who got the whole Game of Thrones started in the first place, plus the seemingly accidental revelation that legendary characters do exist, where do you think the story is headed? How does it end? Does R+L equal J? Who is Azor Ahai and is he the prince who was promised, or are they two different people?
Presumably Daenerys rides Drogon; who are the other two dragon riders? What was the point of recasting Daario Naharis when neither is particularly interesting? Why is Grey Worm so cute? How can he and Missandei get together when he is Unsullied? Where is Rickon? Is Jaquen H’ghar still around, just wearing a different face? When will someone get reanimated? Who wins the Game of Thrones?
It goes without saying that spoilers abound in Comments, but we’ll say it anyway.
P.S. Here’s a Peter Dinklage Game of Thrones theme that is vastly superior to the rotating Tyrion version that everyone sent us two weeks ago.

Your Grace, I place all my bets on Martin’s most fave character (and mine)–TYRION LANNISTER–to be sit on the IRON THRONE, Your Grace. And oh, Tyrion’s smirk at his father is an EMMY-caliber piece, Your Grace.

The theory I find most plausible predicts that there would be no Iron Throne at all in the end and don’t have high hopes for Tyrion, Dany and Jon’s survival.
The three are most likely to be the three heads of the dragon, and would be involved in the War for the Dawn, and die heroically in the process.
(It just makes sense that they’re the Big Three:
>Dany is Aegon, she rides Drogon. Drogon’s egg was placed near Khal Drogo’s HEART in the pyre.
>Tyrion is Rhaenys, the Brains. He’ll ride Rhaegal, whose egg was placed near Drogo’s HEAD. A Green dragon for his green eye.
>Jon is Visenya, the Brawn. He’ll ride Viserion whose egg was placed between Drogo’s legs; near his, um, SWORD. White dragon for white Snow.)
If the three heads do die, I try to comfort myself that at least the odds (and the foreshadowing) are firmly in the Stark kids’s favor. I’m betting Bran, Arya and Sansa would live, hopefully to rule/rebuild Winterfell (though maybe Bran would have to remain in his tree Beyond-the-Wall because his storyline is so steeped in magic.)
(Also ship-wise, here’s hoping that Sansa would cross paths once more with a certain…um…grave digger and Arya with everyone’s favorite not-so secret bastard (after Jon Snow, of course.))
Jaime’s probably the valonquar which means bad news for him and Cersei (my poor babies *sob*) and endangers the Brienne/Jaime ship from ever fully taking off (noooooooo *wails*)
A bunch of other characters probably will die too. (Actually at this point I’m just going to assume 90% of my favorite characters are going to die just to save myself from disappointment. Not that that makes it any easier to accept)
and R+L most definitely equals J.

It’s good that there are some events in the series that are not the same with the book. It makes those who read the book, myself included, get more excited every episode, instead of saying the usual comments like, “shet madugo to!”, or, “shet eto na yon!”, or the annoying, “ganito kasi mangyayari dyan..”.
Anyway, I think a Targaryen (either Daenerys or the, SPOILER ALERT!, her nephew), a Stark (or maybe Snow?) , or a Lannister (Tyrion!) will end up on the iron throne.
On the other note, I hope George R.R.Martin is taking care of his health. I know this sounds selfish, but if he dies without finishing the last 2 books, I’ll be very very disapppointed.

Your Grace, I believe that HBO should give us a “prequel” GoT season after season five or six. Indeed, readers already knew the events that gave way to the War of the Usurpers, but it is also a win-win case for both viewers and readers for HBO to adapt this part of Westeros history. On the actors who can play in this prequel, those actors who play Arya, Sansa, and Jon Snow can portray the young Lynna, Catlyn, and Ned, respectively for the books say that Arya, Sansa and Jon have close or striking resemblances to their respective parents in their youths, Your Grace. I don’t know about who will be the “right” actors for Raegar, Brandon, young Tywin, the Mad King, etc. but this is all I can think of, Your Grace.

I’m buying that R+L=J thing. I hope Jon Snow is alive after the stabbing. I wouldn’t want to see him undead. I’d take a dead-dead Jon Snow than an undead one. Can’t wait to see the undead Catelyn though. The Bran and Jojen story arc is boring the hell out of me. I’d rather warg into our sampaloc tree than read their parts. My favorite character is Arya. I hope so too that SF is alive. How is Sansa staying a virgin?

cornholio: We, too, were inclined to tune out the Bran and Jojen story arc until the Night King showed up and we were reminded that the Night King’s name is Brandon Stark. As Bran is headed beyond The Wall, this cannot be a coincidence.

cjspotless: How does he look with silver hair and violet eyes? Every house has to maintain dominant characteristics or Ned Stark would be a naive politician and a bad geneticist.

– R+L is definitely = J, and that L loved R deeply.
– I too love most of the changes they made for the series.
– Jon and Dany are most definitely two of the heads. Although I haven’t made my mind up yet who I’d love to see as the third head. Tyrion seems to be even more of a favorite now though, and I bet most people would love to see him in such a glorious position. I’d like it better if it would be either Bran or Aegon though.
– I’d love for Syrio or J’qen to return, but it might be better if we don’t see them ever again. I think such characters add to the appeal of GoT in that they give fleeting glimpses into potentially fascinating stories that will never be told. If that makes sense.
