Norte is extended for 1 week at Glorietta and Trinoma cinemas. Thank You!
In this scene Eliza (Angeli Bayani), whose husband Joaquin has been wrongfully imprisoned for murder, confers with the lawyer who advised him to plead guilty.
By popular demand Lav Diaz’s Norte, Hangganan ng Kasaysayan has been extended for one week at Glorietta in Ayala Center, Makati and at Trinoma in Quezon City.
Schedule of daily screenings from September 17 to 23:
Trinoma 12.10
Glorietta 12:30
Thank you for spreading the word. A four-hour indie loosely based on Dostoevsky and directed by one of the leading lights of “slow cinema” (We dislike the term avidly) was always going to be a hard sell, and without your support it might’ve been a first day-last day theatrical run. That the filmmakers were able to make this movie the exactly the way they wanted to was amazing; that it opened in commercial cinemas was amazing; that enough people have come to see it so it gets a second week is amazing.
Essay question: Which character is the most miserable—Fabian, Joaquin, or Eliza?
September 16th, 2014 at 21:13
Eliza – (Spoiler redacted)
Joaquin – Miserable, yes. (Spoiler redacted) But he’s a very positive guy. He’ll live. Plus, Fabian’s lawyer friends might end up freeing him. We don’t know. We’ll never know. (dammit)
Fabian – His principles/ideas have made him miserable from the beginning. His actions have dug him deeper.
Norte’s a powerful movie. I was in awe. The shots were beautiful. Ang galing.

The most miserable award goes to Fabian. Oh my, oh my, “tsk tsk tsk, kaawa awang nilalang”.
I’d rather not re-tell nor psychobabble about Fabian. I was in the brink of associating myself to his character while watching Norte in Promenade unmindful of a theater packed with senior citizens. For Star Lord’s sake, it was a Tuesday, what were you thinking qbeng? (By the way, please take note of Mondays as well).
The tell tale signs were all over Promenade. The leisurely pace of long lines; men and women in their 60s filling and signing up forms to get free movie passes, and the movie was already in its 3 minutes and I was still in line. I was still in good spirits knowing that I won’t be hounded for life by missing 3-5 minutes of Lav’s shortest film.
Fabian, kawawang Fabian.
Norte made me realize that life in all its seriousness is achingly beautiful. It confounded the values I wish to keep and willfully threw away. I guess, it may not be Fabian who ends up the most miserable but the moviegoer ending up clueless of what he saw.

Wouldn’t call this a review, but here are my thoughts about Norte which I wrote immediately after I saw it in Galleria Sunday night. Powerful movie.

So I watched it a second time with Roni (her first) last weekend. So many things I missed in my first viewing that I caught in the second! And even after two viewings, I still feel as though there were more I could absorb and learn with a third viewing – it has so many layers.
I can’t recall where I read it (have been reading a number of reviews and commentaries on it lately), but someone wrote about a security guard (in Greenhills I think) who watched. When asked how he managed to sit through four hours, he replied, “Maganda po kasi ang istorya.” It just goes to show that truly great cinema is not limited to appreciation by the stereotypical “cinephiles.”

Also, as for the essay question, I’d probably say Fabian. Joaquin and Eliza, I think, found peace at some point and whatever misery they felt had likely lessened over time. Fabian, on the other hand, just got more and more miresable (and I for one believe that he has been miserable all his life).

allancarreon: Yeah, we’ve seen it seven (!) times, though not always on the big screen, and each time we notice something we missed the previous times. Like how clean Ilocos Norte is, including the stray dogs, and how random animals just wander into the frame–dogs, goats, chickens. No cats, though.

By the way, Yumi the Akita is Sid Lucero’s own dog and she’s fine.

Fabian – definitely is the most miserable. Great mind but really troubled. Pwede ko ba isali si Aling Magda and Fabian’s sister?
This film is just incredible. hindi ko naramdaman yung 4 hours. Sana nga makapasok sa Oscars.

I wondered about the dogs in the movie too, how they wandered in and out of frame like they really belonged and how they did not bark at the crew that is (of course) in the background while the film rolled.
I agree with the rest of the people here, Fabian is definitely the most miserable.

Good day Ms. Zafra. Norte’s screening coincided with a doctor-recommended bed rest for my pregnancy. I also have a lot of friends who were not able to catch it for different reasons. Those who did raved like mad on social media. We hope the film will be released on DVD soon so we can also experience the wonder that the above commenters enjoyed. Cheers!
