Last year I was in a just-happy-to-still-see-Roger-playing mode.
And now we’re here.

Poli: It’s been 16 years and I’ve used up all my adjectives.
It feels like 2005.

@jessicazafra: do you remember what in Roger Federer that drew you to him? That put you in this emotional fandom that I seem to have for him? I was a latecomer to the kingdom… it began when he bawled and bawled and bawled in front of Rod Laver when he won the Australian Open (2006?!).

details maybe later: Wimbledon 4th round, 2001, where he calmly dismantled the reigning champion Sampras and then cried. Was impressed by the shotmaking rather than the looks, as he had a terrible ponytail and spotty skin, and his shirt was too big.
Have always rooted for the emotional weirdos who go to the net (McEnroe, Ivanisevic, Federer).

His first match I saw on TV was against Ferrero, in the third round of the 2000 US Open. Federer lost (Ferrero was already a player then, I believe), but I decided to support him anyway because he’s Swiss, like my other favorite player, Hingis.
But it was the Sampras match in Wimbledon the following year that really turned me into a fan. It was also the match that had me bugging my father to buy me a puka shell necklace.

Poli: Before 2001 he was a brat who competed with Safin at racquet-breaking tantrums.
