Alice Munro wins Nobel Prize for Literature
Canadian author Alice Munro has won the 2013 Nobel Prize for Literature.
Making the announcement, Peter Englund, permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy, called her a “master of the contemporary short story”.
The 82-year-old, whose books include Dear Life and Dance of the Happy Shades, is only the 13th woman to win the prize since its inception in 1901. (Read Women who have won the Nobel Prize for Literature.)
“I knew I was in the running, yes, but I never thought I would win,” Munro told Canadian media.
Presented by the Nobel Foundation, the award – which is presented to a living writer – is worth eight million kronor (£770,000).

“Alice Munro was always an overrated writer and now that she’s won The Nobel she always will be. The Nobel is a joke and has been for ages…” -@BretEastonEllis #Twitter

Yaaay! Congrats to Alice Munro! The New Yorker has published the second story that appears in her collection, Dear Life. “Amundsen” is about a teacher who works in a sanatorium. She works with kids suffering from tuberculosis and meets the surgeon who heads the institution. The link: http://www.newyorker.com/fiction/features/2012/08/27/120827fi_fiction_munro?currentPage=all
I thought Murakami was going to get it the award this year, but with the secrecy and unpredictability of the selection process, it’s really hard to tell.
