Christopher Hitchens goes to the spa
Be afraid. Be very afraid.
“Viewed from the front when clothed, the subject resembles a burst horsehair sofa cushion or (in the opinion of one of us) a condom hastily stuffed with an old sock. The side perspective is that of an avocado pear and, on certain mornings, an avocado pear that retains nothing of nutritious value but its tinge of alligator green. . .”
Christopher Hitchens On the Limits of Self-Improvement in Vanity Fair.
In the same issue, The Man In The Irony Mask, a profile of Stephen Colbert. I love him.

Holy crapsss!!! I don’t know which was more horrible: the picture of him in black (seaweed?) mask or his naked, fat body showing his thickly carpeted chest! Mother Teresa must be quivering in orgasmic pleasure in her grave!
Still love me some Hitch, though. His latest “god is Not Great” is brilliantly well-written as usual, though quite shallowly and unconvincingly reasoned out in many parts, especially that little chapter on Eastern religions.

This was a total surprise. [link=http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5gIKp6SMKuAR1cD8M3gd3OePuyDbgD8S6HC081]Hitch’s aforementioned book gets short-listed for this year’s non-fiction National Book Award!!![/link]
I was actually thinking of what this year’s list might be just some months back and thought “god Is Not Great” was way too divisive to even get considered and that Walter Isaacson’s universally acclaimed (rightly so), lovely Einstein biography would have been the safe shoo-in for the Oscars of the book world. I’d be really shocked if Hitch actually won.
Too, on the fiction front, Michael Chabon’s “The Yiddish Policeman’s Union” was an obvious snub. I hadn’t even heard of any of the fiction nominees prior to the announcement, although this could be totally my fault (turns red).
