Heath Ledger is dead.
He was 28. He was found dead in his SoHo apartment Tuesday. The cause of death appears to have been an accidental overdose of sleeping pills. This is the initial report in the NYT city room blog.
He was brilliant in Brokeback Mountain, conveying the rage, sadness, and grief that his character could not articulate to himself. He played The Joker in the upcoming Batman movie, The Dark Knight, and was working on a Terry Gilliam movie. He also appears as one of the Bob Dylans in Todd Haynes’s I’m Not There. Remember him in Ten Things I Hate About You? You think you’re in for a typical teen flick, and then you’re going, Who’s that guy?

Sayang.
I’ll always remember him and Michelle for the coffee joke in Brokeback Mountain.
Alma: You know, your friend could come inside, have a cup of coffee…
Ennis: He’s from Texas.
Alma: Texans don’t drink coffee?

I heard about this on the way to work this morning. The cab driver even said he drove Heath about a year ago from Sheraton at the Park and seemed not at all like a guy who would take drugs, that he seemed really grounded. I’m really shocked. He was a star in 10 Things, which I loved.

i will always remember him crying at the back of a “bodega” the first time they parted ways with jake gyllenhaal after herding sheeps in the movie “brokeback mountain”. Now the line “i wish i know how to quit you” won’t be just the movie’s. the same line would be said by his wife and fans. we’ll miss you, joker.

The saddest thing to me about this is that the strongest and most lasting memory I have of him is from Brokeback Mountain and the great tragedy that happened to his character in it. The greatness of his performance was that it seemed all too uncomfortably real. And when I found out that he actually went on to live with and have a baby with his movie wife, whom he subsequently separated from, made the verisimilitude of the film tragedy alongside – possibly – the very real depression he must have been suffering from (if it was a suicide; the NY Times also published an interview a while back revealing how the malevolence of his character Joker got to him too much and something about Ambien not being able to help him deal w/ the resulting insomnia) that much more starkly disheartening.
Also, eeriely, today the Oscar nominations were announced.

I introduced my class to Shakespeare via 10 Things I Hate about You. The scene most of them remember was Heath Ledger crooning the lines, “you’re just to good to be true,” When i broke the news to them this morning (right before the quarterly exams!)They were shocked. Two of them, Ia and Sarah were floored. The other girls rued that he would not get to play Joker anymore.

Oops. I was wrong. My students and i will get to see Heath as Joker.

my cousin was so depressed upon hearing the news. she’s a big fan and even memorized the lines in all of heath’s flicks.
am sure he’s happy up there. he left such great legacy that one will always cherish.
