Nancy Drew fan to the US Supreme Court
US President Barack Obama in his speech nominating Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the US Supreme Court: “It’s my understanding that Judge Sotomayor’s interest in the law was sparked as a young girl by reading the Nancy Drew series. And that when she was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 8, she was informed that people with diabetes can’t grow up to be police officers or private investigators like Nancy Drew. In essence she was told she’d have to scale back her dreams.â€
I think the message of Nancy Drew has always been, ‘Girls, if you use your brains you can be anything you want to be. You can do lots of things at the same time. Be considerate to your parents, your housekeepers, your friends, and your boyfriend, but don’t let them tell you what you can or can’t do. Be polite to everyone even if they’re rude or scary. Don’t believe everything you hear, and always bring a cardigan.’

I’m a guy, but I believe I was able to read all those classic original Nancy Drew mystery stories (1 to 56?, plus the inferior newer series) when I was in elementary and high school (aren’t school libraries great?). For somebody inspired by Nancy Drew to be nominated to the US Supreme Court, too cool for words.

pmaligaya,
i’ve read them all, too, after exhausting hardy boys–those classics hard bound originals. in between, i’d also pick on dana girls, and the three investigators, and of course, bobsey twins. nothing beats the classic book covers!

Same here too…got into Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys as a kid thanks to Myrene (yup, Sandwich’s bass guitarist) and her friend.

Arrrgh! I hate that I bequeathed all my Nancy Drews to a niece who never took care of them. After I painstakingly hoarded all my grade school allowance to buy these precious hardcover books, too.
I admit, part of the charm of these books was wondering if Nancy and Ned ever went beyond platonic dating. Haha.

I read Hardy Boys first before Nancy Drew. I think my first crush was Frank, hehehe.
