Eat the answer

June 08, 2010 By: jessicazafra Category: Contest, Food 84 Comments →

On the second week of our La Cuisine quiz, we’re treating the winner and her/his friend to a very Gallic delicacy.

The question: What is the French term for a dish of land molluscs swimming in garlic butter?

Post the answer in Comments. All the correct entries are eligible for the raffle this weekend. The winner will be announced on Monday.

The winner and a companion get to eat the answer at La Cuisine, Sedeno corner San Agustin Street (near Makati Sports), Salcedo Village, Makati. Telephone 8932072. Reservations: 5015202 or 7520335. Where’s your appetite?

Inhale that.

Jeffrey just texted that I forgot to write the final score in the match with India. I? It’s not my byline. Hahahaha.

At which event no one will ask the question that’s on everyone’s mind.

Going to the Al Gore lecture “The Leader as Environment Steward” at SMX Convention Center tomorrow afternoon, then to the gala dinner. Have to write up the event, so I will be scribbling throughout.

The invitation says “Attire: Corporate”. Every time I see that corporate attire is required I have the urge to wear a ratty t-shirt with an A in a circle. However, out of respect for Mr. Gore, who has won the Oscar, the Nobel Peace Prize, and technically, the presidency of the United States (but was thwarted by the hanging chads of Florida), I shall wear a necktie.

This one! Beaded men’s necktie by James Reyes.

I didn’t say with what.

I want to live there.

When my sister and I first visited Strand Bookstore in New York (18 miles of books!) we hatched a plan to get locked inside the store after closing hours. We figured that by sealing off a couple of aisles in the basement with stacks of books, we could create cubbyholes to live in. The plan was never executed, but I still want to live in a bookstore. Maybe not Shakespeare and Co in Paris, where I always have a mighty sneezing fit, but a place with rows and rows of bookshelves so high you need a ladder to look at the top shelf. As long as they vacuum regularly. Here are my current residential candidates:

Selexyz Dominicanen in Maastricht, Netherlands, an independent bookstore housed in a 13th century cathedral.

Livraria Lello in Porto, Portugal, which looks like the setting for a 1930s Gothic mystery thriller involving forbidden books and secret passages. My friend Chus has always wanted to go to Portugal; I’ll tag along if this is the hotel.

The winner of the Roger-Rafa playing attire design contest is Dulce N. Cabanag!

Click on the thumbnail to see the full drawing.

I freely admit that the name (which I presume is an alias) gave her an added advantage. Dulce N. Cabanag, we’re going to lunch.

The correct answer in the weekly La Cuisine giveaway is Croque Monsieur. Everyone got that right. In the raffle I picked out number 46, Alice Theresa 88. Alice Theresa 88, you and a companion are going to have a croque monsieur merienda at La Cuisine. Let me know when you want to claim your prize and I’ll make the reservation.

The next La Cuisine question will be posted tomorrow.

The winner of the Best Caption prize in You’ve Got Homework is lilith for this caption:

Bambi’s real parents.

Congratulations, everyone. Please post your full names in Comments (they won’t be published) so we can arrange for you to collect your prizes.

Alice Theresa 88, your reservation (under your real name) for two at La Cuisine for Sunday, 13 June at 11am is confirmed. Bon appetit.

Bringing back the dead

On weekends and during breaks from shooting the TV shows Bubble Gang, Show Me The Manny, and Family Feud, director Uro de la Cruz goes looking for “parts”. “Parts” is his euphemism for “old film cameras”; partly to prevent friends from saying, “You’re going to buy another camera?!”, partly because he knows he has rescued too many half-extinct cameras from junk shops, flea markets, and antique stores. . .
