Are we bipolar yet?
Lash year see died in a sipwreck. Dish year see died in a car crass.
– Bakla movie joke
Addendum from Orosa: Neksh year see will die of emphysheema.
Last night the Philippines was riveted by a hostage drama. This morning the Philippines was riveted by the Miss Universe pageant.
Are we bipolar yet?
And yet these disparate events had the same problem.
KATANGAHAN.

I don’t think it was katangahan on Venus’ part. I think she was just overwhelmed. For someone who doesn’t dwell on mistakes and can easily move on, the question can be difficult to answer in just a few seconds. So I guess she answered truthfully. On the other hand, the question is a major major beauty contest question, she should have a ready-made answer for it. Parang pang job interview, may list of possible questions…

I am normally indifferent about it but today I really hate the euphemisms thrown by our politicians and various chiefs-of-some-agencies. “It could happen in any country,” “Lapse of judgment,” “It could not have happened,” and much more sugar-coated toxins. What I wanted to hear is this: The uniformed men who are supposed to protect us don’t have the necessary brains to well, protect us.

“In my 22 years of existence, I can say there is nothing major, major, problems. I feel very confident with my family, with the love they’re giving to me.”
Now, Ms Raj, you have something major major to think think about. Are you feeling any less confident now?
Hahaa!

I ‘m proud of Ms. Raj, I think she did the best she could given that question at that situation. Anyone of us can think of a better answer now, but imagine being in a room full of people, and the spotlight on you, I would have fainted. The fact that she made it to top five showed that she worked really hard, for that I would not ask for anything more.

And that pretty much sums it up. Katangahan talaga.

Dammit.

At least Venus Raj’s katangahan did not cost people their lives.
Considering Miss Universe isn’t that big of a deal here, I’m surprised she was featured in my local paper’s website:

it’s like Janina San Miguel all over again. Ms. Raj, do you feel any major major pressure right now??
August 25th, 2010 at 22:52
For me, the real katangahan was that she did not avail of an interpreter. Miss Mexico speaks english.

humanum777: My plan exactly. In future pageants we send an interpreter who will make the answer sound brilliant.
Example:
Contestant: Um, ah, wala lang, alam mo na, yung ano, aaaa, chorva.
Interpreter: My feelings are best summed up by T.S. Eliot: I grow old, I grow old, I shall wear the bottoms of my trousers rolled.
Technically not a misrepresentation.

Yay.
Of course, this is part of the Pinoy world domination master plan.

Yes, we are bipolar and we confuse it with major major resilience.

balqis: Excellent point. This is why Rizal is a genius: he created Sisa, a Pinoy archetype. Iyak tawa iyak tawa Crispin Basilio Crispeeeeen.

For our interpreter: either Miriam Defensor-Santiago or Armida Siguion-Reyna. Takot lang ng mga hurado!

Her answer was very Filipino
…’I have never made a mistake’
I have never met a Filipino who has ever admitted to making a mistake
…always excuses
‘She was being honest!’
‘It was a difficult question!’
‘She needs an interpreter!’
If you don’t make mistakes, you don’t learn
…if you don’t learn, you don’t grow
…if you don’t grow, you are stagnant
Her answer represents the entire Filipino people perfectly
…so much potential to be the best
…yet always falls behind
…so sad
