If you’re planning to catch the Azkals in Bacolod (updated)
New news so confusing we put it on top: Coach Simon McMenemy replaced? What the.
* * * * *
This is all tentative, but if you’re planning to watch the Azkals Philippine football team take on the Mongolian team in the AFC Challenge Cup 2012 Qualifiers in Bacolod next month, you might find the information below useful. Thanks to our indefatigable head of online research, brewhuh23.
Neil Etheridge fans: We don’t know if Neil can join the Azkals in February as he has been named to his club Fulham’s first team. It would be great to see Neil in Bacolod but. . .He’s on the first team of an English premiership club! First player of Filipino descent, as far as we know.
Of course the all-time leading scorer of FC Barcelona with 357 goals in 357 games is the Spanish-Filipino Paulino Alcantara, who played for the club between 1912 and 1927. In 1922, in a game between Spain and France, he hit a goal so hard it ripped the net. (Second most important factoid I picked up while doing Flip magazine, the first being the YC jingle lyrics.)

Ooh, Fulham? He could be playing alongside the USMNT’s Clint Dempsey (currently Fulham’s leading scorer).

Hi Ms. Jessica! Regarding Neil, Sir Dan Palami (the Azkals’ manager) already confirmed that Neil will play for the Azkals on Feb 9. =D

Guess the new coach is very good and i hope he works wonders for the team, but the team’s management could have broken the news to Simon McMenemy properly.

agree with kaye, could be someone to give azkals a different direction.
January 11th, 2011 at 12:32
Etheridge has a Twitter account!!!
Add @Neil38Etheridge. Now there’s a direct line to the man himself, and our goal to have him land on this blog reading (or pretending to read) a book is a step closer to being accomplished.
BTW, the Azkals start training today at 4PM at UMak. No Etheridge, though, until Feb.

According to Neil he’s still waiting for the Azkals management to contact Fulham for permission, so he could join the AFC Challenge Cup vs. Mongolia.
Hindi pa pala confeeermed ang lahat. Neil wants to play for us, but Palami et. al. haven’t spoken to Fulham yet?? Naman…
January 12th, 2011 at 01:21
Kaye— thanks for the Neil update! Im gonna follow him on twitter. They need to do it soon if they want Neil to play for the Azkals coz there might be conflicts in schedules.
January 12th, 2011 at 14:33
He makes fun of Etheridge all the time. Nakaka-aliw!
Sana nga kausapin na nila Dan Palami ang Fulham FC management for Neil.
On another news, since the Y’husbands haven’t been affiliated with any pro-football club for two years, they’re signing up with Indonesia 128, the country’s “other” league. They’ll still represent PH in the internationals, however.

@brewhuh23, kaye:
according to @AzkalerosTwits, sir dan said they already drafted a request letter for fulham and will send it probably today. kalmado lang tayo, hehe. i also doubt that there will be conflict in skeds. by feb, the Asian Cup will be over and mark schwarzer (fulham’s first keeper) will be back. so no worries; neil will be free. =)
January 12th, 2011 at 18:30
Kaye — Sige hahaha, kakapalan ko yung fez ko for Neil. Sa Indonesia magsa-sign ang mga Younghusbands? Nakow, mabenta kasi sila dun diba? Winnar!
boranzohn — Ah ok, that’s good to know :) We want to see Neil in Feb :) Etheridge, magiging Jock with a Book ka na, I claim it!!!
January 13th, 2011 at 11:01
@boranzohn — that’s good news, and I hope that they’ll send the letter soon. Neil has been tweeting that he’s been waiting for the request from RP to Fulham management. I guess it’s his way of making “parinig” to the Azkals management since he’s also been saying he’d be back in Manila in February.
Re: Younghusbands, they’re very popular in Indonesia and the younger husband in fact has 22,000+ followers, a number which the rest of the Azkals (including Uno) want to beat. On the other hand, it’s good training for them if they sign up with a pro league.
There’s also word going around that Simon McMenemy is being asked to coach a junior Philippine team.
January 13th, 2011 at 11:34
^ yup, we’ll see neil in feb! =)
re: the younghusbands, sir rick olivares had tweeted that they won’t be signing the contract w/indonesia because there was a condition that they won’t be able to play w/the NT. that was last night though; today will be the final decision. let’s see. ;)

Here be the latest in which Mr. Etheridge opines on the “sacking” of Mr Simon McMenemy and the installation of Mr Weiss as new head Azkal.

January 15th, 2011 at 21:04
About McMenemy coaching the junior team, parang ang off naman nun di ba?
January 16th, 2011 at 10:23
Brewhuh–Haha…for once, gusto ko sila masilip in person.
Yeah, McMenemy coaching the juniors is a definite downgrade from coaching the national team. The services of the new coach was offered for free as part of the development grant from Germany.
On the other hand, if McMenemy helps train or coaches the juniors, it will surely be a good start for the young ones. Oh well…
