Game Day. Philippines v Korea at 1530hrs (1430 Manila time)
The match will be played in the auxiliary field of Ansan Wa~ Stadium. The main field is reserved for the finals.
We’re in the media tent alongside the pitch, so close I can see their pores.
The Malaysia-Singapore game is on. The score is currently 33-12, Singapore.
The Philippine rugby team in the stands, awaiting their turn.
We’ll be liveblogging the match and taking video and photos. Stay tuned. (The visuals will be a bit delayed, not enough fingers.)
The weather is nice and cold. It rained earlier and it’s cloudy with bursts of sun. Talk to me.

Hi Jessica,
Could you explain a bit about the rules of rugby? At least, just enough to appreciate the game? I’m afraid that the only rule I know is that you could only pass to someone behind you. The other stuff I tried reading up on was a bit confusing.

Thanks for the question, Erwin. Everybody, that’s Erwin my editor at Esquire (Philippine edition, soon to launch).
Basic rules:
You only pass to someone behind you.
You can tackle the ball carrier.
You contest possession in a scrum. Your biggest guys (forwards) lock heads with their biggest guys, then the scrum-half (#9) throws the ball between them. The hookers (#2) try to get the ball and hook it with their feet and pass it to the second row guys. The scrum-half retrieves it and decides whom to pass it to.
If the ball goes out of bounds there is a line-out. That’s where the ball is thrown in and the teams lift their tall guys, who try to catch it.
Harvard, whose rugby team had a very good season, has the basic rules on their site. http://www.hcs.harvard.edu/~radrugby/rookie_primer.html

wenkebach: That’s the thing—in times of stress I get very, very calm. I think this is why people describe me as “scary”.
