Our team for the World Robot Olympiad
L-R: Cristian Ayala, Lucas Ramos and Rom Villarica
The International School Manila Robotics Team composed of Cristian Ayala, Lucas Ramos and Rom Villarica won Gold in the Open Category, High School Division at the 10th Philippine Robotics Olympiad. These 9th graders beat 11 other high school teams for the right to represent the Philippines in the World Robot Olympiad in Abu Dhabi this November.
Lucas Ramos demonstrates how the CarrierTron works.
This year’s theme for the Open Category was “Robots Improve Life”. Lucas, Cris and Rom conceptualized robots that would take over tasks too dangerous for humans in dire situations, such as a nuclear reactor meltdown. The 10th Philippine Robotics Olympiad was organized by Felta, headed by Ms. Mylene Abiva.
The ISM team won the Bronze Medal in the World Robot Olympiad held in Manila last year, and are hoping to improve on that finish in this year’s competition.

Back in the mid 90’s, our high school (yeah, Ms. Zafra, we have the same alma mater) were sending way more complicated entries. In fact, one year we sent to the Intel competition an online remotely-operated microscope, so someone could operate the actual microscope and petri dish from, say abroad, over the internet. And this was in 1995. :)
