Stand back, protected by cat
We looked up from a very late lunch and noticed this ginger cat right outside the cafe’s window. This happens often enough to convince us that we have a feline security detail.

hi jessica,
i have read your article in phil star about cats in the pet life section and because of it mas lalo kung gusto magkaroon ng pusa, i find them mysterious and intelligent. however, there are hindrances in owning one,
#1, dito sa bahay marami kaming furnitures that might get broken at patay ako sa nanay ko pag nangyari yun.
#2 is there any particular breed of a cat that doesnt like to jump or yung hindi malikot? like, umm a cat version of a bulldog? kung meron i want that breed.
Question:
do you know a pet shop that sells russian blues?
salamat!

Hi nikko17,
We’re writing about pets every week in the Star’s Pet Life section so if anyone has a question about cats just post it in Comments.
1. Lagot ang furniture ninyo. Cats like to use furniture as scratching posts. Experts recommend rubbing orange oil on them to keep cats away but we doubt that would work.
2. We don’t know of any non-active cats, but Ragdolls and Russian Blues are supposed to be well-behaved.
It’s not the accidental breakage from jumping that you should worry about, it’s the intentional damage. Cats can land on a shelf full of delicate porcelain and not break anything—unless they want to.
All our cats adopted us so we’ve never bought from pet shops. But there are lots of people online looking for new homes for their cats. Our friend adopted a Russian Blue from people who were leaving the country. We’ll ask her how the Blue is doing.

From our friend the non-crazy cat lady:
Sombra, that was my dear Russian Blue, passed away more than a year ago. actually, yung vet clinic na suki ko for my cats gave her to me kasi her Spanish original owners (Sombra means shadow, di ba? they gave her that name) wanted to put her to sleep. she cannot hold on to her bladder, panay ang jingle kung saan-saan. she was still young then. instead of putting her to sleep naalala ako ng vet and called me up. do i want to adopt a Russian Blue daw? i did not really care kung ano pang breed yun, basta naawa naman ako because she was healthy otherwise. she spent more than 7 years with me. iniyakan ko yan. anyway, will ask around. mahirap yata ang Russian Blue.
