The Public vs Arnold Clavio vs the Azkals: Sexist, Racist, or Lookist?
Could it be that the reaction to Arnold Clavio’s statement is so passionate because he’s…uhh…because he umm…because he doesn’t look like the Azkals?
To take Clavio’s side would imply that you look more like Arnold Clavio than Phil Younghusband or Neil Etheridge.

What never ceases to amaze me, seriously, is how that puppet can form an opinion! Never mind that it’s racist, but I find it mighty awesome that it can actually think on its own. You’d never expect reasoning like that from a rather unattractive mess of cotton and felt and what have you, but there we have it. And he’s on fire, too; he’s on the news!
I suspect some kind of demonic worship involved.

Arnold Clavio: “Hindi ko kayo ka-kultura, kasi wala dito (points to his heart) at wala dito (points to his head)…Hindi naman kayo Pilipino, nagpapanggap lang kayong kayumanggi, hindi kayo dito lumaki, mahirap iyun.”
Azkals fan: Dapat sinagot ng Azkals “Eh ano, basta hindi ka namin kamukha!”
Lookist??

Eh ‘yung tatlong niyang co-anchors dun sa segment na ‘yun puro mapuputi.
The look on Lyn Ching’s face when Arnold Clavio said “…Hindi naman kayo Pilipino. Nagpapanggap lang kayong kayumanggi…” was priceless.

A lot of us believe he actually has a point. Those Azkals may have Pinoy blood….but they do not ACT like Pinoys….that is the gist of it. How that can be considered a racist remark is beyond me! Those directly involved in the sexual harassment allegation didnt even make an apology, kahit pampa-lubag loob lang…you know…if they have done anything offensive. Matigas pa!
My friends and I are Team Clavio…inspite of his looks. I just wish people will stop worshipping those Azkals just because they are good-looking or because of the football factor! Geez!!!!

The Azkals became arrogant before they became good at football.

Devil’s advocate — and what does “acting Pinoy” mean?
The thing about they’re not pure Pinoys and therefore not worthy of being in the football team irks me. Para kasing ang dating ng mga comments about the Azkals is that we’re “cheating” by having these guys rep the country, when in fact it’s common practice all over the football-playing world. FIFA says that players who claim heritage can play for a country, whether they are citizens or not. Last World Cup Giuseppe Rossi who hails from New Jersey played for Italy and the Boateng brothers played for two different countries – Jerome for Germany (where they grew up) and Kevin for Ghana (where they claim heritage). So ano pa kaya si Aly Borromeo na purong Pinoy and just happened to spend a few years in the States (doesn’t make him Fil-AM), or the Younghusbands who have a Pinay mom?
There’s a certain level of play expected for a football team to compete on a global scale. Our league is just not up to the par so if we want to compete we need guys who’ve played in the more competitive leagues and are used to the intensity physicality of it. This is not to denigrate our home-grown talent — just look at Chieffy who is the best player out there — but having home-grown talent exposed to the “foreign” just polishes the level of play even more. Win win all around.
And another thing — ilang taong hindi pinapansin ang national football team ng ‘Pinas. Hindi sila umusbong lang two years ago. Nakakaawa ang mga yan na walang equipment o fans. Ngayon na they’re finally getting the attention they (and the sport) deserves e parang they never paid their dues?!

So many comments on Arnold being racist. It’s disrespectful, yeah, but are his comments on the Azkals considered racist?

All this talk about racism when anyone who understands the politics of European football knows that the Younghusbands (and the rest of them half-pinoys) only agreed to become Filipinos after not making it in the Premier League bench. You seriously think Phil Younghusband would agree to play alongside Chieffy Caligdong if he was given the chance to be on the same pitch as Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard? I don’t think so.
