Mr. Looper
We can’t hear “Looper” without thinking of “Mr. Looper”, which is what Big Bird called the old storekeeper on Sesame Street (“It’s Hooper! Hooper!”). When Will Lee, the actor who played Mr. Hooper, died, the producers decided that no one would replace him and that it was time young viewers learned one of the basic truths of life: Death. Three decades later this episode still makes us reach for the tissues.
This is intelligent children’s television, free of the superstitious-sentimental drivel that infests the mass media. That’s probably why Mitt Romney wants Big Bird and company fired.
After we stop blowing our nose we’re off to watch Looper.

I miss Sesame Street. I remember my mom just making me sit in front of the TV when that was on.
I love everyone there. I think this is why I fell in love with NYC in the first place. This was my first memory of it.
I wonder what happened to rest of the cast. And oh, speaking of Big Bird, I remember Ellen Degeneres saying on her show last night that she hopes that characters such as Big Bird shouldn’t be immortalized in sexy halloween outfits. I agree.

I remember watching this one, live, on TV. It’s up there with Ninoy’s assassination and my first All Saints’ Day at the cemetery as one of my first lessons about death.
I do remember one season where Maria and Luis got married. The actor who played Gordon also passed away recently. And the guy who played David turned out to be, um, not too Sesame Street-worthy in real life, so he was replaced by another shopkeeper.
On a shallow note, I have a shirt that looks exactly like the one Maria is wearing in this clip.

I remember watching this as a kid, and I remember crying. Watching it again, and call me cheesy, but I teared up a little. Can’t believe a children’s show can do that to an adult, and it goes to show – as you said – that it is indeed an intelligent children’s show. Screw Romney.
On a different note, I haven’t seen Maria in a looong time, and now that I’ve seen her again… doesn’t she look like Michelle Rodriguez?
