If Serendra wants to starve the stray cats to death, then we can starve their business to death. Save the cats, then boycott Serendra.
By now you must be aware that Serendra in BGC (Remember that place where they had a gas explosion some years ago and all the tenants had to be evacuated? No not Glorietta 2, the one in BGC) prohibits residents and tenants from feeding the stray cats in the area. This is a place that styles itself as “pet-friendly”, so the hypocrisy would be laughable if it weren’t infuriating.
“As much as we value animals and promote their welfare”??? Clearly they think they are dealing with gullible idiots. A contradiction is still a contradiction even if you dress it in this season’s designer knockoffs.
Serendra has no right to penalize non-residents and non-tenants, i.e. the clientele on which the survival of their business depends. However, the people who are kind enough to give their leftovers to the stray cats are hassled by the guards. I know security guards to be cat people who share their food with cats, who keep them company in their boredom. I understand that the security guards of Serendra are under orders and they need to keep their jobs.
It does not cost much to spay and neuter cats to control the population of strays. Once they are spayed or neutered, the cats can be returned to the area to control the rodent population, and more importantly to a deathstyle lifestyle brand, to provide subjects for cute photos for the clientele’s social media accounts.
Does Serendra not want people to dine at their restaurants and sample this “lifestyle” they sell? That can be arranged. We do not have to set foot in the place. (Our friends with the misfortune to live there can meet us for dinner somewhere else.) Hindi klas ang mang-api ng pusa at asong kalye.
Does Serendra want the return of the bubonic plague a.k.a. The Black Death? They are helping it by starving out the stray cat population, leaving the area free for rats, carriers of plague.
Serendra will not spend for the spaying and neutering of the stray cats in its area, but they will bilk shake down the residents and tenants who show compassion for the cats.
If no one feeds the cats, you know that by now they are starving and in desperate need of our help. We need to get them out of there. The different animal welfare groups and volunteer organizations should get together and collect the stray cats and move them to a shelter or other safe place. I know, the animal welfare groups and cat-loving volunteers are already overburdened, but who will do this if not us?
Some people would say: These are hard times, there are so many people who need help, let’s help people first. Listen. Times are ALWAYS hard. There will ALWAYS be people in need of help. It is not a choice of whom to help. We need to help people AND stray cats and dogs.
We need to save stray cats and dogs not because they are cute, but because we are human beings, and our compassion for living things is what makes us human. (We will address Ayala Land’s claim to being green, sustainable and environment-friendly at another time.)
Remember what happened to the cats at Shangrila BGC. They were rounded up and exterminated. What is happening to the cats at Serendra is even more insidious. They are starving the stray cats to death (at no cost to them, and maybe even a profit). Serendra is getting a lot of flak for this and in a new burst of venality they may try to end their terrible PR by rounding up and killing the cats. Do not let this happen.
We need to get the stray cats out of Serendra, and then we never have to go to Serendra again. They starve the cats, we starve them of business. You, the consumer, have powers. Use them.
