Journal of a Lockdown, 19 May 2020
New quarantine hobby: Listening to the death zaps of those blasted mosquitoes. I know my stats are accurate. Each color represents a different day.
There I was in front of my building, waiting for the Lalamove rider to pick up a package, soaking up some vitamin D while checking my messages. Five minutes later the rider arrived and I realized to my horror that while I had gloves on, I wasn’t wearing a mask! Of course the rider was wearing mask, helmet, and gloves. I passed him the package and slunk back to my apartment in shame. Had I contaminated anyone? Was it safe in that empty street? Had I inhaled aerosol particles carrying the virus? Would I catch the disease? And I had been so careful, I barely left the house in eight weeks. What if it gets so bad I’d have to be hospitalized? What if there are no ventilators left? What if, what if?
My cat smacked me before I made a bleach cocktail a la Trump.
I took a survey in our chat group. Bad news, good news. What are you worried about? What have you learned in lockdown that cheers you up?
Causes of worry:
-Economic collapse
-What if we haven’t seen the worst of the pandemic?
-The majority still act like they’re immortal, with a total disregard for the lives of others.
-The return of the Dark Ages.
-Totalitarianism
-How to survive in a changed world
-Mental health issues
-What if this isn’t the worst, and climate apocalypse is next?
Causes of cheer:
-Greater self-reliance: being able to feed yourself, clean the house, edit videos.
-Stress and pressure equals better work performance (and this from a mindfulness coach)
-Learning to live intensely by doing what you want
-Really liking working at home in your underwear
-Knowing that if it all goes belly-up you can create opportunities for yourself
-Reassessing what’s important and what’s frivolous
-Realizing that you’re a decent cook
-Finding that you’ve chosen your relationships wisely
Happy possibilities: Big pharma says a covid vaccine may arrive in October. From the Pisay network, Dr Cymbeline Tangcongco Culiat and NellOne have filed a patent for a covid treatment using a talented protein.
For someone who doesn’t leave the house I had such a busy day that I didn’t have time for my 40-minute afternoon nap.
