Jessica Rules TV: Ask Jon, the music edition
It has recently come to our attention that we are no longer the only people ripping off Tom Waits titles for our writing. Jon Morales our missing straight guy columnist has infringed on our infringement monopoly, referencing Brawlers, Bawlers and Bastards in his twitter profile. Yes he is on twitter, @jonnymo.
We caught up with Jon Sunday night to discuss a wide range of topics, from his Tagalog proficiency and cooking skills to the girlfriend to city ratio of his nomadic existence. In this video we talk about Tom Waits, whether The Wire is the greatest TV series ever, the artistic ambitions of Kanye West, why the Black Eyed Peas should just go away, the toxicology report on Amy Winehouse, being a fan of Maldita, and which Eraserheads songs he knows.
Shot 9/11/11 by my Macbook Air. (Not super-clear, but uploading the file takes much less time.)

Crush ko na siya! Bet ko ang tawa at ang music-geekiness (kahit meron siyang weird tic pag napapasarap ang usapan (~3 min mark) na nauuna yung boses niya kesa sa galaw ng bibig niya. Chos!)

I understand that that Maldita song “Porque” is in a bilingual mix of Chavacano (a Spanish-Visayan pidgin — the band members appear to be from Zamboanga City) and Tagalog, and that it’s original to them, not a cover.
Like Jon, I had assumed that it was a cover (from some Latin American singer?), and I complained to myself that I could not completely understand what they were saying (because of the imperfect Spanish grammar — as if I remembered everything from two years of College Spanish many years ago!) — until I found out that those verses were in Chavacano. Then everything made sense.
In any event, I think it’s quite a good song, musically and otherwise.

Yay for Kanye!
I listen to Kanye when I have rage issues. Sometimes I even think of pulling a Kanye…”Manila, why wont you let me be great?”
Jon, do you sometimes ask that too?

Yeah, one whole wing of my family speaks Chavacano. I wish I did. My mom seemed to know the song already though and it doesn’t sound like their other songs so I thought it might be a cover.
@eponine maybe i misunderstood the tagalog but that’s not a tic, I can’t actually make my mouth move slower than the sounds I’m making. That’s the audio desyncing from the video. That would be pretty sweet though.
@tara I dunno Manila’s doing a pretty damn good job at letting me be great :). Look at the company I keep!
