MMFF Day 5: Unshaken, Unrattled, Unrolled. Suddenly we have a new appreciation of Segunda Mano.
The challenge: to decide which of the three episodes in Regal Entertainment’s Shake, Rattle and Roll XXIII is the worst. It’s a tight contest. The three directors have demonstrated their ability to make cogent, compelling movies—Yanggaw, Confessional, 100.
That just makes it worse.

Yeah, this was a disappointment. Thought not the worst of SRR (at least there are no killer Christmas trees running loose), it’s not very good, either.
The 2nd and 3rd episodes had good basic ideas but poor execution. The 1st was just yech. None of these were scary at all.
You’re right, Somes directed the awesome and frightening “Yanggaw” while Tarrog did “Confessional.” Martinez is also a good writer/director. It is kind of odd that they churned these out. Perhaps there was pressure for more “commercialization?”

By the way, for what it’s worth, my vote for worst episode of the film is “Tamawo.” Just… no saving grace whatsoever. At least the 2nd and 3rd eps had interesting premises, just really bland executions. The first was just… yech, if I may repeat myself.
