Thank you for letting us know your opinions, they are much appreciated. We posted the question because we need a topic for our column on current events; it seemed current enough but strangely, we have no opinion on the matter. Essentially we don’t give a shit, so we were hoping you would infect us with your passion for this issue…
Drat, must find another topic.

Hmmmmnnnn..I think transgender contestants should be allowed to participate. In the human rights perspective, the European Court on Human Rights had already ruled that transgenders should be accorded the same rights as women because per medical or psychological reasons, they are women except that they do not have ovaries.
Further, beauty contests are mostly supercifial i.e. who has the best goods(natural or artificial). So based on physical appearances alone, transgenders qualify.
It would also be fun to know how hardcore feminists would react to the entry of transgenders in the beauty contest world. They already oppose the objectification of women blah blah blah yet here comes a new form of competition who could very well outdo them in the pabonggahay factor.
It would also be interesting to know how feminists would extend their arguments to cover or exclude transgenders, who have different issues from the biologically female. And most transgenders live for this sort of thing why deny them the joy of doing something which they have long been supporting?

So being a mere transvestite isn’t sufficient to be admitted?

Sa akin, OK lang.
Pero please, huwag naman silang sumali pa sa Little Miss Philippines huhuhu T_T

I understand the decision though I don’t necessarily promote it.
1. Let’s face it, the wider audience of Miss Universe has ceased to be women. It has shifted to GAY MEN.
2. Do women still place beauty queens in high regard? Are beauty pageants still relevant?
3. The Donald Trump factor: MONEY. The decision… of allowing transgendered women to join Miss Universe is not at all a gender equality issue. It’s about RATINGS.
4. The template of a Miss Universe beauty queen has changed. Gone are the days of the beauty queen doing the ceremonial walk in a cape and scepter. Gone are the days of The Little Sisters of Namibia, Hong Kong, etc. Gone are the days of having three Question and Answer portions.
Miss Universe, Donald Trump-era, is all about physical female beauty, natural or artificial. In the future, female robots would probably be able to join as well. They just need to define what a “female robot” actually is (e.g. having breast missiles similar to Mazinger Z’s Aphrodite A).
5. Miss Universe is, after all, a brand. It’s like Lady’s Choice mayonnaise — it could be a gentleman’s choice, but the brand will always be Lady’s Choice. The “Miss” in Miss Universe is just part of the branding. But if we’re going to be strict about it…
6. Let’s rethink the title “Miss Universe”. Say, “Sir/Ma’am Universe”?

In response, I will share a Facebook friend’s status. Can’t think of how to improve upon it.
“People who argue that the “dignity” and “pride” of some superficial beauty pageant should be “preserved” and “protected” from “forceful” entry of transgenders really have to revise their own standard for what things are worthy of pride and dignity, and what things are so stupid it should be irrelevant – like beauty pageants.”

Should we put more animals in the circus? Sounds fun!

No. Not because I am anti-transgender whatsoever, but I think it is much better if they will make a different pageant for them. Like Ms. Transgender of the Universe, Bagong Binibini ng Pilipinas, or anything that is new. I find it insulting if transgenders will be treated equally as women. No. Please, no.

I wish I had seen this sooner. Of course, I am all for it. This has been a long time coming. It is also time to stop the nonsense that transsexual women are “fake/not real women.” We are as real as can be and made up of the same cells, tissue and flesh as the next girl/woman. The idea of “genetic womanhood” is a harmful myth akin to being a Stepford Wife. It is completely ridiculous, oppressive and disempowering to womankind.
Plus, it is a beauty pageant. It is not Miss Uterus/Miss Vagina/Miss Do You Think You Can Bear A Child. But I agree that pageants objectify women, are ridden with politics, and all about money. It is time to rethink them. There was a time when it was an insult to straight men for gay men to claim equality with them. That has changed.
Transwomen in the Miss Universe is simply part of the natural evolution of the human race.

I see, so transgender people shouldn’t be treated equally. Yeah, that’s not anti-transgender at all.
Personally, it’s a fantastic chance to see how humans measure up to nature. Can man make a better woman than biology? We have the technology!
April 17th, 2012 at 21:51
Why can’t they leave these pageants to the natural born women? Don’t they have their own pageants to attend to?
Di ako agree. Maganda si Jenna, paradise-level goddess si robot, pero hindi siya babae.

Thanks, PinayTG! Hope you don’t mind that we’re quoting you verbatim in our InterAksyon column.

Yes, I am in favor of accepting transgender contestants in beauty pageants. This will be liberating to everyone, a gesture of valuing freedom and being true to oneself. Their inclusion will expand the playing field and probably bring the competition to another level, different parameters (e.g., will swimsuit portion be retained?) and make it more interesting, and hopefully, more honest.
