Anatomy of A Virtual Lynch Mob
Why are we frothing over Ricky Lo’s interview with Anne Hathaway? When I watched the video my first reaction was embarrassment. But who exactly was I embarrassed for: Lo, Hathaway, or myself?
As celebrity interviews go, this is not the most dumbass we’ve ever seen. On the scale of inanity, it’s average. Granted, we are connoisseurs at the cringe-making interview. (We remember the one where a local TV host talks to a Brazilian model and discovers that she is of German descent. “Heil Hitler!” he exclaims. And he does the Nazi salute. On television. I’m not sure, but there may have been a laugh track to go with it. Note: Never do that in Germany.)

An Eat Bulaga host once asked the The Corrs, ‘So, why The Corrs?’

lestat: A Beatles tribute band once appeared on German Moreno’s noontime extravaganza. During the interview, one band member, attempting to be cheeky, said, “We were wondering who made your suits.” Kuya Germs was delighted and recommended them to his tailor.
Dapat talaga may museum retrospective ng mga costume ni Kuya Germs.

Ricky Lo, on why Carlo Caparas deserves to be our National Artist:
“He’s the only artist with a street named after him.”

I think the problems of the interview were:
1. Lo seemed to forget that the interview was about Anne, not Lea. Name-dropping once is okay, but he did it at least twice and went on about it.
2. He just didn’t seem to be paying much attention to Anne. He kept cutting her off a few times mid-sentence (“Anyway…”), and he kept looking at his phone.
3. He couldn’t recover from some of the faux pas he apparently made.
It’s true, there were cultural landmines that he just stepped into, but I don’t think it’s all there was to it. He failed some of the basics of Interview 101, Pinoy or not.
Another Pinoy (from TFC; he’d won an Emmy, I believe) did interview Anne, and it went significantly better. So the cultural gap was not something difficult to avoid.
Here is the “other” interview:

lestat: Bwahahaha. Darnit, I missed that one. That is hilarious (and embarrassing).

Nangilo ang ngipin ko doon sa buong interview!!!
I’m still looking for it but Ricky Lo’s finest work is not his latest interview with Anne Hathaway but with an actor, years ago at a press junket.
The actor (can’t remember who he was at the moment!) looked pissed after a few questions, snatched Ricky Lo’s cue cards, threw them at his (Ricky’s) face & threw a fit. I cannot, for the life of me, remember who the actor was. I saw a clip on Startalk where they showed it for Mr. Lo’s birthday celebration.

Until I read this article, I thought Lo’s the best showbiz interviewer (I read his column instead). Combining Zafra’s critical analysis (often SHARP) and reviewing his interview, I gather that Lo should seek assistance with Nepales. There’s nothing wrong with that, right?

Brewhuh: There’s a part of me that wishes that the actor in question was Rowan Atkinson. Ricky once interviewed him for The Star during the Johnny English press junket, and he kept asking Rowan (more than once) if RA was like Mr. Bean in real life.
Apparently Ricky has never seen this: http://youtu.be/91DSNL1BEeY

Stella — Nope it wasn’t Rowan Atkinson but someone unconventional like him. Brrrr, why can’t I remember who that was!

Lestat — Those suits need to be donated to the Smithsonian Institute hahaha!

I felt like I was having a root canal while watching the interview but hey, it could’ve been a lot worst… how?? At least RL didn’t asked AH to look into his magic salamin at sabihin sa sarili kung ano ang gusto mong iparating dito (or words to that effect) =)
