Twitchy
In which I drag you kicking and screaming to a French movie about a gangster who wants to be a pianist. Emotional Weather Report, today in the Philippine Star.
Still no sign of the original version with Harvey Keitel. As for The Beat That My Heart Skipped, ask your usual source, wink wink nudge nudge.

wink wink nudge nudge? oh you mean…..! which reminds me. i once asked my usual source if he has in his collection the film borat. he doesn’t, so he asked his “colleague” if he has one. i found it terribly funny, because the question sounded vulgar. anyhoo, do you like joseph heller? i once read somewhere that his doormat had “go away” written on it. i was shocked. joseph heller had a doormat? what does yours say?

Such timing. It’s Edu Manzano’s birthday.

Thanks for that, I’ve been trying to force this film to my friends for awhile, and I’m having a hard time selling the movie. I’ll just thrust a printed copy of your article to their faces from now on. Also been trying to find the original for almost a year now, and no such luck. So please, please, please, when you do find it, please announce it with unadulterated glee and boldfaced caps.

“Art is not a tranquil occupation. What is peaceful about wrestling with nothingness? If the process isn’t brutal, it’s just decor. Your choice: violence towards others, or violence to yourself. ”
Let me just say that you struck my cord with this. So very very true. Some people never understand how difficult a life of art is. All that they perceive of it is but a romanticized picture.
Anyways, you completely dragged me into this. I will ask my source. :-)

Jessica I had to stop reading just when you were about to tell the movie in detail, I want to see the movie and was afraid that you’d tell the whole story and I wouldn’t be able to enjoy it as much. Can you give the gist / plot summary without giving away the whole outline? :)

Romain Duris looks like the Gallagher brothers’ French cousin: just as potty-mouthed and violent as those stoked blokes, but way cooler.

i really like it. i have sort of a different take on things, though, like about his nervous energy and all that. i feel that he is twitchy as hell because he’s not doing what he likes best. then he gets into a different kind of twitchy mode when he starts to play the piano again because he can’t wait to get real good at it. i could sort of relate to Tom, which i think is the biggest reason why the entire movie almost made me cry. i’m not a gangster. but i’m sort of forced into a life i do not like and i do not even remember how i got here. and what hurts is i know what i want to do, and i try doing it once in a while but i just can’t stand myself right now for being so bad at it.
so these days i’m all twitchy and no one understands why.
