39. Never date a guy named Bad (Updated)
Crazy Heart, written and directed by Scott Cooper, starring Jeff Bridges as country singer Bad Blake, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Robert Duvall, and Colin Farrell.
Before the movie.
– What are our favorite Jeff Bridges movies? I loved him in Starman.
– The Big Lebowski.
– Even if he had stunk in Crazy Heart the Academy would still owe him for The Dude.
– The Last Picture Show.
– Jagged Edge, where the typewriter gave the killer away. I love a movie that hinges on typography.
– The Fabulous Baker Boys!
– Fearless.
– Against All Odds. (Cringe) He’s allowed some stinkers.
– Pauline Kael said Jeff Bridges is the most natural and least self-conscious screen actor who ever lived.
– He’s just cool.
At the movie.
– Country music makes me want to kill myself. Or more likely, other people.
– I’m going to need a cigarette after this.
– Me, I’ll need a drink. I suspect that movies about country singers are made in cahoots with distilleries.
– Is George Clooney’s character in Up In The Air named Ryan Bingham? The guy who sings the Crazy Heart song is named Ryan Bingham.
Bad Blake meets Jane, who has a four-year-old son named Buddy.
– Hey, that’s my dog’s name.
This is Buddy the giant Labrador. He’s so huge, the neighborhood tricycle drivers refer to his house as “Yung bahay na may aso na parang hindi na aso, parang bear.” (The house with the dog that’s so big it doesn’t look like a dog anymore, it’s a bear.)
Maggie Gyllenhaal kisses Jeff Bridges.
– Yucch, kissing an old guy who smokes and drinks all day then throws up. He would taste like an ashtray, whiskey, and vomit.
– Not to mention old people.
– But in the movie it’s Jeff Bridges so it’s fine.
– I’m happy Colin Farrell is back.
– He should stick to roles like these.
– I don’t care if he reeks of ashtray.
Bad Blake takes his girlfriend’s four-year-old son Buddy to the mall, stops at a bar, and loses him.
– I hate kids.
– We’re sympathizing with the drunk guy. Jeff Bridges is that good.
– This is clearly a first-time director movie.
– It’s an hommage to Tender Mercies, which is the better movie. But Crazy Heart is worth seeing for Jeff Bridges’ performance. It’s a vehicle for his brilliance.
– I think it’s time to reassess Heaven’s Gate. I need to find the dvd.

It’s posts like this that make me realize how I can never be friends with you. I wouldn’t be able to keep up with the wit!

I once read a (third-hand) anecdote about Maggie Gyllenhaal being asked about her role in Crazy Heart and the subsequent creepy Freudian subtext of the May-December romance blah blah, and her answer was basically in the same train of thought as the one you guys had: “Hel-lo, I’m in a movie with Jeff Bridges!”
Then again, MG is also Mrs. Peter Sarsgaard in real life. Suwerte si manang.

Jeff Bridges can sing! More shocking still, so can Colin Farrell.
