We love writing paper

bookplates1
Set of bookplates by Gallison, Php320 at National Bookstores.

We may be in bibliophilia rehab, but we can still pop into the bookstore to look at stationery. We love stationery. This probably stems from the penmanship training at our old school—we learned to enjoy scribbling on blank sheets of paper. This may also account for our choice of occupations.

The set contains 80 bookplates in 10 designs.

“Why do you have bookplates? Why don’t you just write your name on the flyleaf?”

“No reason. We just like bookplates.”

britto
Pocket spiral notebook, cat design by Romero Britto, Php200+ (pricetag fell off).

We used to haunt the little stationery shop at St. Theresa’s, the one on the second floor near the cafeteria, for paper and rubber erasers. Did you sniff those scented rubber erasers, too? We know people who used to chew on them. They also gnawed on their Mongol pencils.

liberty box
Box of Liberty art fabrics notecards by Chronicle Books, Php957. 16 cards, with envelopes, 4 designs: Clementina (1896), Pelagia (2007), Nesfield (1900s) inspired by William Morris, and Amarylis (1880s).

We would’ve gotten these notecards for the fabric-covered box.

A message from Saffy to her gourmet cat food manufacturers

saffy is not amused

Re: Where is my Fancy Feast??

New stocks of Fancy Feast Savory Salmon Feast have not arrived in the supermarkets and pet stores where my human shops for our supplies. I want my Fancy Feast Savory Salmon Feast! It is my favorite flavor! In its absence I usually settle for Seafood Feast or Cod, Sole and Shrimp Feast. They’re not available in stores either!

In fact the last batch of Seafood Feast and Cod, Sole and Shrimp Feast that my human bought in December was a bit on the dry side. They were probably older stocks.

I am not amused. You will send fresh cans of All the Classic flavors of Fancy Feast to supermarkets and pet stores immediately, or you will feel my wrath.

P.S. I also eat dry kibble, but I want variation.

According to a new book, Saffy thinks we are a very large cat.

greenbelt

In Greenbelt there’s a cat who looks like Hitler. Here he is listening in on our conversation at Lusso.

They’re a little camera shy but can’t help posing.

So my cats and I were watching “Downton Abbey” last year. (I have two cats, one girl cat, who is twelve—in cat years, obviously—and a boy cat, who is seven.) And at one point my younger cat turned to me and said, “What is that human woman trying to say to that other man?”

And I said, “That is Mary Crawley. She is trying to tell Matthew that she is in love with him.”

And my younger cat thought about it and said, “Well, that is a very hard thing to do.” And then he said, “You have to pick just the right time.”

Last week’s conversations, as told by a cat

December 25, 2013 By: jessicazafra Category: Cats, Current Events, Movies 8 Comments →

1
“Which Meryl Streep movie are you? We are Heartburn. No, Plenty. Wait…Adaptation!”

2
“Noel is Still of the Night and Boboy is Silkwood. Juan, you are not Sophie’s Choice, more like Plenty. Ricky…Postcards From the Edge? Jon, you wish you were The French Lieutenant’s Woman, fall in line. James: Mamma Mia or The Devil Wears Prada. Michael is Out of Africa. Victor, the dingo ate your baby.”

3
Ban hammers at shopping malls? That might stop the Martilyo Gang, but won’t it pave the way for the Showerhead Gang or the Paperweight Gang or even the Platform Shoe Gang? Great work, Secretary Mar, let’s see you stop Thor from coming to the mall.”

4
“Oh no, we are not watching all the Metro Manila filmfest entries this year. Maybe 10,000 Hours, which we think of as One Year, One Month and Three Weeks.”

5
“Shall we open another bottle? You know what’s a great Xmas movie? Besides It’s A Wonderful Life. Besides Metropolitan. The Shop Around The Corner.”

The Eyes of Sauron

December 20, 2013 By: jessicazafra Category: Cats No Comments →

eyes of sauron
“Build me an army worthy of Mordor.”

For years a family of white and orange cats has lived in our building. We call them Merry, Pippin, and Gimli. They have been joined by a dark orange cat we call Samwise. The cat in the photo is Merry, a pretty, cranky female who yells at us to hurry up with the food service and often tries to slap the bowl out of our hands. She does not allow herself to be touched.

The other day she walked by with her tail up and we realized that she’s actually male. Then he engaged us in a staring contest, and we realized that he has the eyes of Sauron.
