What IS zen?
From our friend Tina:
There will be a Glimpse into Zen seminar from 3:00 to 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 21, at the Full Circle zen meditation center in the Good Shepherd Convent compound in Quezon City, near the corner of Aurora Boulevard and Katipunan Avenue.
Glimpse is an introduction for those who wish to know more about the practice of zen. It includes question-and-answer sessions, a demonstration of the different meditation postures, and a short meditation period under the guidance of an accredited zen teacher of the Sanbo Kyodan. For those participants who decide that they would like to pursue the practice further, this introduction is a prerequisite for the six-session orientation workshop which will later be held weekly. Glimpse Into Zen is free of charge.
Participants are requested to bring their own drinking water, and to wear loose, comfortable clothes suitable for sitting on floor cushions. Chairs are available for those with physical limitations. Please refrain from wearing shorts, or any clothing with bold prints or colors.
The green entrance gate of the Good Shepherd compound at 1043 Aurora Boulevard is between the LRT-Katipunan underground station and the multi-story Aurora Milestone. Glimpse Into Zen will be held on the second floor of the building just inside the Good Shepherd gate. There is a secure parking lot located further within the grounds.
For more information or to register for the seminar, leave your name and number in Comments (it won’t be published) and we’ll forward the information to the organizers.
Koosi is 14! Today she is the Oracle.
On this day fourteen years ago, we were adopted by a skinny ginger cat. Her feline name being unpronounceable to humans, we named her after the imaginary friend of Deedee from Dexter’s Laboratory, a regal Tolkien character, our favorite tennis player at the time, and our favorite late-night show host: Koosi Galadriel Ivanisevic-O’Brien. Today she rules our household with an iron paw. You think the Lannisters are imperious? Happy Birthday, Koosi!
When she is not busy opening presents, Her Mightiness Koosi will deign to answer your questions about your future. (Not the nation’s future or the world’s, just yours.) Post them in Comments and check back after a few hours.
Polo club agrees to 2-week moratorium on catching and impounding cats
Mat says, “Please don’t throw out the cats. I was a stray cat and we don’t just walk up to humans and bite them. Yucch, humans are full of diseases, gross.”
Update on the Polo Club cats story:
The Manila Polo Club has declared a two-week moratorium on rounding up cats and taking them to the city pound.
Club president Roman Azanza met with concerned club members on the cat situation last Friday. The members proposed a feeding and vaccination program for the cats, which will be implemented in the next two weeks and presented to the club board on April 18.
The members will set up secluded feeding stations and water spray bottles for the cats, and put up “No Feeding of Cats” signs in the cogon. The cats living in the stables have their mothers looking after them.
We hope everything turns out well; we’ll have another update in two weeks.
Cats evicted from Polo Club, taken to city pound
According to our friend from CARA (Compassion and Responsibility for Animals), the Manila Polo Club called the Makati City Pound on Wednesday to round up the cats living on the club grounds. The Polo Club had announced that the cats would be put up for adoption.
Eight adult cats were captured—all of them already neutered and spayed. Also caught was one 4-week-old kitten separated from its mother. CARA members visited the city pound yesterday morning and asked the head veterinarian to release the cats to them. The head vet said new protocols were set up recently, and all the cats would be released on Friday at 10am.
The Manila Polo Club released this statement: “In the light of growing concerns regarding the Club’s cats for adoption program, the Manila Polo Club affirms that it is being done to ensure a safer environment for its members and their dependents while helping stray cats find a more appropriate habitat.
“The program results from two separate incidents wherein a member and a two-year old guest were bitten by stray cats in the Club. Luckily both were treated immediately with anti-rabies shots.
“Moving forward, the Club chooses to be proactive in addressing potential threat of the rabies virus and related Zoonotic Disease. While some animal welfare advocate friends may insist that most MPC cats were spayed and vaccinated, this offers no guarantee. Vaccination expires and the stray cats in the Club are neither monitored nor well taken care of. MPC has a standing policy – “no pets allowed” etc.”
There is a vaccine for rabies, but there is no vaccine for narrow-mindedness.
Wouldn’t it be nice if Manny Pacquiao, whose application for membership was rejected by the Manila Polo Club, could adopt the cats evicted by said club? Apparently neither Manny Pacquiao nor the cats have the pedigree to satisfy club standards.
