Expect a surfeit of girls starting a wave at a concert or dressing like Lady Gaga. How unique. What about

1. Trying out as ball girls at the US Open. The little kids will probably kick your ass but it’s about working up the nerve to do it. If you make it we’ll pay you extra to “accidentally” kick certain players in the face as you retrieve their balls.

2. Spending a couple of weeks in the foreign country where the language you’ve been learning for years is spoken—and speaking only that.

3. Building a particle accelerator, armored exoskeleton, jetpack or other science project. Science high school students: You can get funding for your more outré ideas—without having to write a grant proposal, before you even publish in a peer-reviewed journal!

4. Self-publishing a book you and your best friend wrote.

5. Making a movie. P500,000 is the same amount as a Cinemalaya grant.

6. Starting a non-profit organization for literacy, safe water, or a cause you feel very strongly about.

7. Auditioning for spots with the Kirov, the Joffrey Ballet Theatre, Alvin Ailey or Martha Graham. For dancers naturally.

8. We would enroll in an Archaeology course then join an expedition. Always wanted to be Indiana Jones.

9. We would go to Space Camp!

You’ve been pawned: Winners of our Pawn Stars book giveaway

June 07, 2012 By: jessicazafra Category: Books, Contest, Television No Comments →

The question was: Who is your favorite Pawn Stars character?

The winners are:

udongski: “Chum Lee! The jester of the group bringing in the laughs and acting as a guinea pig for most of the tests conducted by the show. He may look like the least likely to give an accurate information on items but he has his moments.”

chosen_one: “It has to be Rick. he’s the heart and soul of the show. The guy’s fair, as a business man he needs to make money but not at the expense of cheating the seller just for a quick buck. The tidbits he spits out is both informative and educational while his classic “I know a guy that knows this stuff” will live on for ages.”

dog1ph: “Back in the day…The Old Man for the way he treats the customers. Sure, Rick and the boys get most of the air time since the old man’s catching his zzzz’s but you can see when he talks to customers that he’s got that very respectable way of asking you if you want to sell it or pawn it. Even calling some customers ma’am, young lady or sir, which often softens the blow of his saying “That’s not going to happen” when a counter-offer’s in the making…”

Congratulations you three, you each win an autographed hardcover copy of of License To Pawn: Deals, Steals, and My Life at the Gold & Silver by Rick Harrison, proprietor of the World-Famous Gold & Silver Pawn Shop at the center of the hit History Channel series, Pawn Stars.

Please post your full names in Comments (They won’t be published) so you can claim your prizes.

Update: dog1ph and chosen_one, you may pick up your prizes at the Customer Service counter, National Bookstore, Power Plant Rockwell, Makati. (Sorry we can’t have prizes sent to other branches as this is not an NBS-sponsored contest, they just agreed to be the drop.) udongski, we need your full name.

That’s the end of our License to Pawn giveaway. Thanks to the History Channel, Pawn Stars, and everyone who joined this contest. Don’t forget to catch Pawn Stars, Mondays at 10pm on the History Channel.

The winner of the Weekly LitWit Challenge 8.9: I lost/found it at the movies is…

June 02, 2012 By: jessicazafra Category: Books, Contest No Comments →

Jeff Daniels and Mia Farrow prepare to enter the movie in Woody Allen’s The Purple Rose of Cairo. Our top 5 Woody Allen movies in no particular order: Love and Death, Annie Hall, Manhattan, Take the Money and Run (sentimental attachment), The Purple Rose of Cairo.

Chosen by our contest judge, screenwriter, producer and our shopping/salon buddy Raymond Lee.

My winner is jaime’s piece (#7). It’s not the best written—the sophomoric and soporific first sentence, for instance, is entirely unnecessary. But it’s the most convincing, least self conscious, and (therefore) most affecting entry. Naniwala ako—o at least gusto kong maniwala—na nangyari nga ito sa tunay na buhay. Wala rin siyang masyadong borloloy. It’s an effective demonstration that sparse can be expansive.”

Congratulations, jaime! You may pick up your prize—Php2,500 in National Bookstore gift certificates—at the Customer Service counter at National Bookstore in Power Plant Mall, Rockwell, Makati, any day starting Tuesday, 5 June 2012. You need to show them an official ID.

The Weekly LitWit Challenge is brought to you by our friends at National Bookstore.

Win a signed copy of Licensed to Pawn by the star of Pawn Stars

May 17, 2012 By: jessicazafra Category: Books, Contest, Television 12 Comments →

Pawn Stars is the History Channel’s hit series about the World-Famous Gold & Silver Pawn Shop and the three generations of the Harrison family who run it. All sorts of stuff winds up at the shop, from the usual watches and electronics to the rarities: handcuffs owned by Harry Houdini, a photo album signed by General Patton, a Picasso etching, a chair from the floor of the US Senate, a recalled poster for Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, and tons of others.

Pawn Stars star Rick Harrison has written a memoir called License to Pawn: Deals, Steals, and My Life at the Gold & Silver. (When will Old Man and Chumley write their memoirs, our friend Tina asked.) Every week we will post a question related to Pawn Stars, and the three best answers will each receive a signed copy of Licensed to Pawn. Yes, signed by Rick, with his business card enclosed.

This week’s question: What is your favorite episode of Pawn Stars and why do you like it?
