LitWit Challenge: Write dialogue using only Pinoy movie titles

February 24, 2014 By: jessicazafra Category: Books, Contest, Movies 8 Comments →

Boboy directed us to this POYKPAC Comedy video in which a couple break up in a conversation composed entirely of movie titles. “Would be fun to have Talong and Engkantadang Kangkarot in there,” Boboy said. Great idea!

Your LitWit Challenge is to write us 30 or more lines of dialogue using only the titles of Pinoy movies. We’ll leave the situation up to you: breakup, courtship, argument, revenge, knock yourself out. Between Bukas, Tatakpan Ka Ng Diyaryo and Huwag Mong Buhayin Ang Bangkay, the possibilities are endless. Between Talong, Kangkong, Itlog, you’ve got salad.

Post your entries in Comments; submissions will be accepted until noon on 2 March 2014. Our Writing Workshop participants are disqualified from this contest.

The winner will receive these two books: Thomas Pynchon’s latest novel Bleeding Edge in hardcover, and an omnibus edition of the Smiley novels by John Le Carre, probably the greatest spy novels ever written.

Balay Dr. Niere by Kristina Cassandra T. Santos
“Built in 1928 during the American occupation, the Balay Dr. Dionisio Niere belonged to the first Doctor of Medicine of Boljoon. During the Second World War, this house was used as headquarters for the Japanese Imperial Army. It is now part of the popular Boljoon Heritage Trail.” Taken December 28, 2011 with a Canon 550D (18-55mm)

untalanbaclayon
Baclayon Church by Kiko Untalan
Taken inside the Baclayon church in May 2009 using the missus’s Nikon D90 camera. With 15 family members, we visited the church during our 3 day summer tour of Bohol. Of the several hundred photos I took during that trip, this is my favorite.

mercado banaue
The Rice Terraces of Batad by Michael Vincent Mercado
Taken December 2012 in Brgy. Batad, Banaue, Ifugao with a Canon EOS Kiss X4. Walking along the narrow paths of the 2000-year-old rice terraces requires calculated steps and great balance. Something that the natives do not have problems with. What they struggle with however, is the decreasing interest in agriculture among the young.

viriportico
Portico of Baclayon Church by Jeffrey Catha Viri
Baclayon Church in Bohol was founded in 1596. Its portico is the focal point of its interiors. Taken September 6, 2009 with a Sony Cybershot DSC-TX10.

kristinasantosboljoon
Boljoon Church by Kristina Cassandra T. Santos.
“Established in 1692, it is the oldest remaining original stone church in Cebu. In 1999, the National Historical Institute declared it a National Historical Landmark.”Taken December 28, 2011 with a Canon 550D (18-55mm)

“Tucked in the center of Bacolod City is the Provincial Capitol and Lagoon. It is one of two green spaces that Bacolenos will forever seek to protect and nurture. The Capitol Lagoon is famed for its midcentury carabao statues by Francesco Ricardo Monti. Overhead is the famed 1930s Capitol building. Leandro Locsin once said that it is the most beautiful of all provincial Capitol buildings. I love how it has been retrofitted to adapt for 21st century amenities while retaining its old world feel.”

“From Quiapo church, we walked along Hidalgo Street in Manila to visit the Basilica of San Sebastian. The basilica known for its Gothic architecture and steel walls was one of our pit stops for visita iglesia last year. Even from afar, on a busy street full of pedicabs, street food vendors, photographers, and religious people walking about, it stood out in its dark beauty. In 2006, the basilica was included in the tentative list for possible designation as World Heritage Site.”

“This is a photo of the MacArthur Landing Memorial taken in 2010 in Palo, Leyte near Tacloban. One doesn’t get a sense of the size of these statues until you see them for yourself. A person of average height would only reach to the waists of these statues. The figure of Carlos P. Romulo (the one with the round helmet at the rear) was toppled by Typhoon Yolanda. It has since been set upright.”

The next set of entries will be posted on Thursday.

Description: Calle Real, Iloilo
While in Iloilo for the holidays, I ended up in the old part of the city because jeepney routes have apparently changed or I simply forgot which jeep goes where. Walking around, I had to stop and take a picture of this building with my iPhone because it looked like Main Street in Disneyland.

A fresh coat of paint and new lighting fixtures did wonders to what was then a crumbling old building with an assortment of shops on the first floor and who knows what on the upper floors. This building is along Calle Real (JM Basa St.) and was built in the early part of the 20th century in what was then the central commercial district of Iloilo.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that several other buildings in the area were also undergoing restoration, including the Regent Theater where I first watched a movie (I was 4 or 5, my family had to beg the cinema people to let me watch Jurassic Park because back then a movie about dinosaurs and people getting eaten was too scary and brutal for kids. Hah.).

A quick Google search revealed that the entire area is being restored and preserved under the supervision of the Iloilo City Cultural Heritage Conservation Council.

Monumento
Photographer: Janis Mae Narvas (taken using a Lenovo A516)
Place: Monumento, Caloocan City, January 21, 2014
Commuters going to and fro the Camanava and Bulacan areas must be surprised to know that it’s actually possible to observe the famed Bonifacio Monument up close. On a whim, I went there to see Guillermo Tolentino’s magnum opus, only to be met by the scorn of jeepney drivers coursing the busy thoroughfare and the mockery of the traffic aides. Nonetheless, the awesome view was worth the danger I faced in crossing that crazy rotonda.

Keep sending your photos. The next set of finalists will be posted on Tuesday.
