People who live in paper houses shouldn’t throw ink.

The artist Don Lucho has constructed an apartment entirely out of paper.

Fantastic! But not recommended for people prone to paper cuts.

If your toilet is made of paper will you still need paper?

See the pictures here.

The fourth entry in the Roger-Rafa playing attire design contest reminds me of childhood field trips to Nayong Pilipino.

Designer: Maan

Designer’s statement: “This is a Filipino culture-inspired tennis attire for Rafa and Roger. Both players are wearing materials made of Philippine textiles: piña cloth, tubaw head wrap, and embroidered fabric. Notice the shell accessories and the hand and arm cuffs.”

In the women’s final today, Samantha Stosur meets Francesca Schiavone in what may be the quietest (lowest-decibel) women’s match in recent memory.

The men’s final at Roland Garros tomorrow will be contested by Rafael Nadal and Robin Soderling. Rafa was asked what kind of weather he would like for the final. He replied, “Always sun. Because sun is energy. Everything is nicer with the sun. My balls are getting more topspin.”

Now you have to listen to The Smiths

Typography by Mico Toledo at Music Philosophy, your weekly dose of song quotes.

My Smiths quote T-shirt would say “Now I know how Joan of Arc felt”.

The scent of books

would be a bouquet of new paper, ink, leather, a faint hint of glue, and cedar wood. Its name would be Literal.

Scent Stories are perfumes inspired by famous authors. Ah&Oh Studio has designed glass bottles shaped like inkwells, with the heads of characters from the authors’ best-known works.

I have to warn you: the Marquis De Sade (or as a classmate in Comp Lit said, the Marquis De Shar-Day, like the singer) is a bore to read. As for the scent, I’m thinking leather and a cell in the Bastille. For Orwell I imagine the smell of pork chops; for Poe whiskey, rose petals and cat piss; and for Laclos diamonds, candlewax and tears.

Yikes

Entry No. 3 in our Roger-Rafa playing outfit design competition almost makes me glad Roger won’t be in the final.

Designer: Alrey

Designer’s statement: “I was thinking along the lines of Russell Crowe in Gladiator/Sam Worthington in Clash of the Titans. Ah, carnage! Gore! Battle to the death! And they wore skirts. Real men.”

Aiiiiieeeee! Rafa in a skirt.

Keep sending your designs to urban.matthias@gmail.com. You have until Saturday night. I can’t think of a prize so I’ll just take the winner to lunch.

Yodeling or Olé-ing?

The second entry in our Roger and Rafa playing outfit design contest is all about national costumes.

Designer: Dulce Navarro Cabanag

Designer’s statement: “I think their costumes should identify their country of origin. Both suggested ‘finals’ outfits will be made of breathable spandex for ease of movement.”

“Rafa’s outfit is a matador costume complete with a cape and a headband with upturned “ears” (I don’t know what you call a matador’s hat). It will have gold embroidery and a trompe l’oeil effect of a slim tie and short jacket. Of course the pants should be super tight (I think Rafa knows what his assets are!).”

“Roger’s lederhosen is also made of spandex with a trompe l’oeil effect of a necktie and suspenders. The side of the tight shorts is embroidered with traditional Swiss patterns. He will also have a felt Alpine hat decorated with a feather.”

Roger Federer from the prosperous city of Basel, Switzerland! Rafael Nadal from the beautiful island of Mallorca, Spain! I thank you. Email your entries until Saturday night to urban.matthias@gmail.com!
